Staying afloat for the moment

When Kim came home from after a day of shopping she was not expecting to find Darren lying on the ground in the middle of the living room.
As she got closer it was hard not to tower over him, so she sat down, and then lay down beside him. There was nothing particularly interesting about the patch of ceiling above them so she turned her head and watched him instead.
“What are we doing?” she asked.
“Bupkis,” he said.
“What?”
“Bupkis, nothing, zilch, zero, nada, squat,” he said, “apparently, it’s all I'm good for.”
“Don’t say that,” she said reflexively, then, “what happened?”
“I got my results back,” he said, “guess how well I did.”
“Oh I'm sorry, Dare,” she said.
“Yeah,” he said, “I'm not really surprised.”
“Darren,” she said severely.
“Come on, Kim,” he said, turning to face her, “let’s be realistic, I'm not smart, not like you, and my circumstances don’t help anything-”
“I'm not smart,” she said defensively, “I work hard.”
“So did I, and what did it get me?” he said, “Bupkis.”
Kim wanted to laugh. “Is that even a word?”
“Yes,” he said, “maybe it’s the only thing I'm good at, words.”
“Then it’s a start,” she said, “let’s see how you really did, and what we can do.”
“I’m not-“
“Enough bupkis,” she said, standing up and reaching a hand out to him.
He smiled and took her hand.
