Character
Name: Tao Men
Series: Shaman King (Specifically Shaman King: Flowers)
Timeline: End of series.
Canon Resource Links: Men lacks an indepth background, so there's a little headcanon.
Son of Ren and Jeanne, Men is the next heir to the Tao family. Please note both Ren-mun and Jeanne-mun were asked for permission to apply for this character.

Men was born and raised in China. He grew up on the Tao estate, which is found hidden deep in the mountains of China. They’re an incredibly wealthy family, possessing planes, a huge manor, and stables among other things. The Tao Family have been established for over 2000 years and have a large amount of various abilities which have been passed down from generation to generation.

Despite the harsh image the Tao family gives off, Men’s upbringing was far from terrible. His mother, Jeanne, is very kind and caring, with Men being the apple of her eye. She’s also a very strict Catholic and has drilled these views into Men. Although though soft spoken, his mother is also very strong willed, often putting his father in his place, much to Men’s own amusement.

Tao Ren, Men’s father, is very proud of his son and spoils him. Teaching and raising Men with his views about how a Tao should act and giving Men anything he wants. Mainly because Ren believes it’s what his son is entitled to:
1) Because he’s a Tao
2) Because it’s his son
Although he’s not afraid to discipline his son it’s obvious he spends a lot of time with him as Men has picked up a lot of his mannerisms and speech.

Much like his mother, Men’s aunt, Jun, fawns completely over Men. Spoiling him and constantly showering with affection. So, as you can see, Men’s life has been pretty well off up until now.

When the time came for the Legendary Warriors to meet once again, Ren took Men along with him. They travelled to Japan and ventured into Tokyo where Lyserg, Chocolove, HoroHoro, Ryu and Hana (Yoh and Anna’s son) had already assembled near a bus stop. Men exited the horse drawn carriage first, and seeing the resemblance, HoroHoro Lyserg and Chocolove thought that the little boy was Ren, until Ren came out of the carriage himself and picked up his son.

Ren bought his son a large child’s meal at a nearby diner while the adults talked. (Hana kind of just sat there.) As Horo question Ren as to the identity of Men’s mother and expressed his views on it Men turned to him and called him stupid.

They then set off for Funbari Onsen. Ren and the other warriors began to explain to Hana what had happened at the final confrontation with Hao, Men was being carried in Ren’s arms but wasn’t really paying attention to what the adults were saying, instead, finding it more amusing to toy with his father’s tie. When they came to the end of the story, everyone fell silent, which lead Men to watch his father curiously, picking up on the vibe in the air. At this point, Yoh and Anna showed up and Hana’s kicked his father in the nuts in frustration. Everyone returned to Funbari Onsen and they stayed there for a short time, during which Men sort of became friends with Hana, before Ren and Men set off back home.

For the next six years he remained in China, being trained and educated by his parents whilst attending primary school until he travelled abroad at the age of 7 accompanied by three of Hao’s old followers who now work under the Tao family. He began staying at the Asakura residence, Funbari Onsen, explaining that he is visiting as part of his Tao Family-Style Royal studies, which calls 'a test of experiencing the life of the lower classes'.

Affiliation: Trainer.

Personality: Men clearly idolizes Ren and as a result has picked up many traits from his father. He’s particularly impatient with a very short temper, and will often lash out at the source of his anger. He’s quite spoiled as he’s used to being doted upon and so is overflowing with self-confidence and sometimes very stubborn. He is also very defiant, rarely listening to what anyone says with the exception of his mother, father and aunt. When he becomes angry or frustrated, the spike on his head stiffens and elongates. Men is every bit as impulsive and brash as his father and possesses a haughty attitude and manner of speaking that is reminiscent of his mother.

Often he can be quite aloof, especially if he thinks the situation doesn’t concern him. He’s focused on succeeding and surpassing the expectations set before him. This is something he shares in common with Asakura Hana, feeling unchallenged and not content to simply succeed the throne to the Tao family Men vows to make it even greater than it once was and become stronger than even his own parents. Like their parents before them, Tao Men and Asakura Hana are locked in an eternal rivalry and this results in them being comrades of sorts.

Men has a habit of picking fights, either to solve problems or to simply show off his strength, he has difficulty however admitting his own faults, often pining the blame (for minor things) on others, believing himself to always be right. Despite his less than friendly demeanor, Men is not a bad person at heart and for all his disagreeable points he’s still a child, no matter how he tries to hide it.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Men is a Shaman, possessing the typical powers of communicating and merging with spirits, not to mention he’s the son of two incredibly powerful people, indicating he holds massive potential. He has already displayed that he can perform two different types of Oversoul with two different spirits, one of which is a God Class, meaning he must have a high level of control and furyoku to make the spirit to listen to him and have it manifest a form.

Due to his upbringing Men is fluent in Chinese, Japanese and French. Like all Tao’s, he has a grasp on martial arts and knows how to defend himself which couples well with him being quick-witted and ready for any situation.

Oh, and don’t mention his height, he hates that. His father was short during his teen years and mother has always been quite small, leaving Men with an underlying paranoia he may end up very short. His biggest weakness though is his short fuse, leading him to act irrationally on occasion.

Samples
(Please note that both samples must take place in Route_29’s setting.)

First Person Sample:
Alright, Zhang-Ching, Billy, Blocken, where are you? I didn’t think even you three were big enough idiots to try and pull something like this. Do you have a death wish? If you come out now I might even think about lessening your punishment.

Bason, can you believe what they’re doing? Who do they think I am? Those imbeciles.

Bason? Bason, you useless spirit, answer me!

Shamash, go and find Bason.

Shamash?

Third Person Sample:
Men scowled as he walked through the town, ignoring everyone around him. What sort of nonsense was this? Waking up in some tiny house with a lady who was definitely not his mother no matter what she said telling him it was his 10th birthday. How stupid. He was seven, not ten.

Though, he had been pleased when he realized that he’d grown, albeit only marginally but he wasn’t prepared to admit that to himself. The smug satisfaction of this however had disappeared to be replaced by irritation when he discovered he couldn’t find any of his servants. This only grew when neither Shamash or Bason responded to his calls.

He spent a small amount of time looking for them before declaring it pointless. Tao Men did not go looking for people. Especially people who didn’t come when summoned. Standing on the outskirts of the town he glared at the route ahead. This wasn’t any place he knew. Not knowing things annoyed him. He made a noise of irritation at the back of his throat and reached into his pocket for the cell phone his parents had given him.

Flipping it open he furrowed his brow when the little screen told him there was no signal. Snapping it shut and shoving it back in his pocket with more force than necessary, Men folded his arm and closed his eyes, he had to think about all of this.

It wasn’t possible for a person to go to bed aged 7 and wake up aged 10. What was happening? And why did it feel like something was missing? Suddenly a realization washed over him and he searched his clothing for his kwan dao.

Gone.

He quickly checked the area around himself for his mother, just out of habit, before cursing under his breath. No weapon and no spirits. “Shit.”
