It was never quiet on Atlantis. Even in the small hours of the morning there was the quiet hum of the city and shifts of scientists or military going about their business.
Radek knew this because he was often still awake when he should have been sleeping. It wasn't entirely because McKay stayed up for hours on end and Radek felt obligated to match the lead scientist's commitment to the expedition; but the reason did involve McKay.
In the small hours of the morning when only the two of them were hard at work, with a half-dozen laptops, four white boards scribbled with equations, and litres of precious coffee in them, McKay would drop the ego he wore as a shield around other people and for those precious few hours they would work as partners and equals.
During the small hours of the morning Radek could see how the respect he had for McKay was reciprocated in kind.
