His soothsayers said the tyrannical lizard would be met in Numidia near the city of Nepte. There he, Gaius Julius Caesar, would engineer its defeat for the glory of Rome. His soothsayers, fingers still stained with entrails, also warned him the lizard's arrival in state of Africa was a punishment from the gods for plunging the empire into a civil war.

Caeser was wise enough not to voice his opinion of the gods. His wisdom also extended towards having a certain merchant meet him near Thusur with a certain curiosity that had found the ears of Caesar in Rome; so great was its horrific nature.

Near Nepte, Caeser saw the lizard for the first time. Its size was beyond what he had thought it would be. It towered over the ruins of a temple and the earth shook with every step it took. When it saw Caeser's large force of dromedarii and Comitatenses, soldiers specialized to fight in the south Numidian terrain, its roar echoed to the depths of Hades.

Caeser did not send his legions into battle with the beast. He nodded to the merchant who whipped his slaves until they had positioned an enormous, wheeled, cage, nearly the size of the great lizard, to face the ruins. A second nod and the cage was opened.

The lizard's roar must have been a challenge because what emerged from the cage roared a challenge in reply. It knuckled out on leathery hands that could easily hold a camel or ten men in a monstrous grip. Black, shaggy fur covered it from head to toe except for the parts that were bare, like the face, hands and feet, and tough as boiled leather. The giant ape rose up and beat it's chest with enormous fists. The air rumbled like thunder and rolled across the barren terrain.

Caeser smiled grimly and hoped the ape would last long enough, and damage Jupiter's lizard enough, for his legions to finish the job.

drabble, t-rex, julius caeser
