Oskar placed the small tea light on the overturned box he was using as a side table. The bare mattress was stained and grubby but it had been free. Everything he owned was in a plastic shopping bag he had tossed in the corner. Everything he loved was in the large trunk pushed into the dark closet.

He reached into his grubby jacket and pulled out a cone of incense. It wasn't hard to steal from the hippy shop in town; the owners were often high and didn't pay much attention to who came into the shop. Their inattention supplied Oskar with another valuable resource.

His foot knocked against the milk bottle filled with blood he had put on the floor while he tried to get the incense burning off the tea light's small flame. He shouldn't even need it, he liked her smell now, but it helped to cover the smell of meat the blood gave off and the other squatters just assumed they were smoking marijuana.

A small, hard candy was fished out of his pocket and tucked away in a cheek as he walked over to the closet. The sun was safely tucked away and his beautiful flytrap could come out.

Eli didn't thank him for helping her out of the trunk. She was still so small, androgynous, while he had grown into a solid man.

It was nice to know she would never change.

Her smell filled the small room, sickly and rotting but also alluring in ways she shouldn't be, as she examined their new home with an impassive face. He couldn't tell if she was pleased or not but it didn't matter to him either way, they would be somewhere else by next week.

"Here," he said and handed her the bottle. She took it from him with both her hands but he wasn't fooled by the act of weakness; she was stronger than she looked. "There's more if you want it but I had to store it somewhere else." She smiled then, she was very easy to please, and the smile even reached her eyes this time. She drank the bottle dry with greedy gulps, spilling blood down her chin and onto her filthy sweater.

"I've got something else for you." She looked up at him as she lapped blood from the inside neck of the bottle. "A puzzle." He held his hand out and in it was a mess of large nails twisted into a knot. He pulled his hand back before she could snatch it away. "And new clothes." She made a face,

"I don't need new clothes." She grabbed at the hand hiding the puzzle but he twisted away from her and held his hand above his head.

"Yes, you do. You're too dirty now and there is enough DNA evidence staining your sweater to get us both in trouble." Oskar was proud of that line, she wouldn't know what 'DNA evidence' was but if Oskar said it was a threat she'd have to comply.

"Fine," she said and held her hand out for the puzzle. They'd played this game before. He rustled the paper bag sitting on the floor with a foot,

"First, you must change. And I have a bowl with water. You must wash up a bit, too." She looked over at the bowl of water then at his hand, weighing the price of a new puzzle. She held out her hand and he placed a rag in her hand.

He sat down on the mattress and watched as she stripped down to faded, threadbare panties. She was thin and dirty but he shivered with repressed desire. They were both monsters but they had each other.

drabble, eli, let the right one in, oskar
