So, I was going to go to bed, but instead decided to finish watching disc 1 of Mai-HiME.
I... well, first impressions.
1.) The fan service is excessive. Sometimes it leads to rather amusing moments, but still. Half the time my expressions match Natsuki's... O_o;; *twitch* This is not a show I would feel comfortable watching with... uhh... most people. You'd think after seeing Babel last weekend it wouldn't bother me as much.^^;
2.) Some of the characters I'm not all that interested in. Or don't really like the design. Like uhh the Headmaster (headmistress, I guess) and her caretaker. So now 10/11 year olds start off skipping to High School (Chiyo-chan: Azumanga Daioh) then just go to teaching a high school class (Rebecca "Becky" Miyamoto: Pani Poni Dash!) to being Headmasters of academies. The caretaker doesn't look like the brightest crayon in the box, and of course she's got a ridiculous maid/servant outfit... plus a large chest.9_9; Of course.
3.) I don't really like Mai's floating ring things. Maybe they'll grow on me. But at the moment they only rank slightly higher than Orihime's (Bleach) stupid fairy things as far as magic/weaponry goes (I don't care if they're awesome and even the enemy admires her power or whatever the heck... the design of the little fairy things I just really am not a fan of... Sailor Chibi Moon probably has cooler attacks than that).
4.) Kagutsuchi, however, is decent looking. It looks cooler than Duran. Though there's some nice animated action sequences with the canine looking Child.
5.) It actually does kind of bother me that "Child" is made plural by just adding an "s"...^^; ("Childs") Though at the same time, it makes me think of Spain.X D
6.) The current episodes actually kind of make me want to see what happens when this gets more serious... and maybe then I'll appreciate them a lot more. I mean, I've rewatched episode 1 of Noir many a time, but episode 1 of Mai-HiME, at the moment, doesn't really stand out in my mind as something I'll desperately want to watch again after I see episode 26 (if I get that far).
7.) It seems to have a colorful cast of characters. I just hope it doesn't get annoying. Large casts can be done well, but we'll see how this goes.
8.) I'm not going to even start on the priest and the nun dancing around the chapel as they lecture one of the students.-_-
9.) I can, to a degree, appreciate the ridiculous aspects as parodies. We've got nuns, waitresses, magical girls, mecha, maids... and lots of bras and panties. It does get to be a bit much at times.
10.) I do like the chibis (and actually, those two characters seem like they're going to be pretty entertaining). But again, fan service, much?X_x (those photos... I will not post...)
Conclusion: There were things I disagreed with... and I'm not a person who likes fan service. Sometimes it's easy to ignore but uhh... not so easy in this show. Overall, not quite as good as I was hoping for it to be, but it's got a lot of potential and I'm still excited for disc 2.^^
