Ugh. People need to understand that the freedom to say whatever you want does not automatically protect you from dealing with the consequences of your ignorance and bigotry.
Exactly. Yes, this guy (whose name I don't care to remember) has the freedom of speech to spew hateful crap. Just like the company that owns the network he works for has the right to free speech to portray a certain image and enact consequences to employees who publicly tarnish it.
It isn't a difficult concept to grasp, really. Free speech means the government can't censor you. Not that you can't face consequences for your actions no matter what you do or say. Also not a difficult concept. I kind of want to rave about this on Facebook, but I don't have the patience to deal with the inevitable ensuing drama and "NO I'M RIGHT SIMPLY BECAUSE I DON'T LIKE WHAT YOU SAID" mentality.
Even if it WAS unconditional, this is not even really an issue of free speech. This guy's "free speech" is not being infringed upon in any way. If it was, he would not be allowed other avenues to spew this crap. As it is, even though he is suspended from his television show, he still has the opportunity--if he so chooses--to say whatever he wants. And even if he gets fired from his television show, that is simply a consequence of his actions, not an infringement on his rights. He can go to other places to say whatever he wants, where people will agree with him. (I'd bet you money he'll end up on Fox News as a guest pretty soon.) And he's not going to get arrested for it or censored
( ... )
I would have said something like that, but I know my uncle--he'd just bitch and bitch about it and not let it go, and resort to insults because he hates being wrong. It's just not worth it.
But you're absolutely right. It's the same thing with people I know who boycotted Oreos or whatever it was for being pro-LGBT but threw a tizzy when people were boycotting Chick-Fil-A because FREE SPEECH.
I've heard things like that, about the Duck Dynasty kerfuffle (that is a word people don't use often enough) being for ratings, too. I have no opinion on that matter, honestly. I don't care about that show or that network. *shrug* Either way it's a further demonstration of what idiots some people are.

Ugh. I've never watched Duck Dynasrt. Don't even know what it's about. But it sounds like a bunch of redneck trash.
I wish the vast majority of Amuuuurrricans would learn that freedom of speech is not unconditional.
