Honey

There's been quite a bit of excitement Chez Mole this weekend.

Himself announced on Thursday night that he was going to harvest the honey from his original hive on the Friday as it was predicted to be sunny and very hot. So, at high noon the following day he gets togged up in all the gear and sallies forth to do the deed.

I've wanted to keep bees for years, but these sorts of aggressive bee stories tend to slow me down for another year or so. I wonder which variety you've got in your hives?

Enjoy the honey! Will you be trying to sell any to your customers? I remember seeing many little jars of honey for sale at French B&Bs.

I wouldn't let it put you off. A friend who lives in NZ has bees who are, by contrast, so laid back they're almost horizontal (or so he claims!). Good protective clothing is a must, though. I think hubby has learned that the hard way.

We're intending to offer the honey at breakfast in the hope that some guests will want to buy as they do with the jam. The rest of it is for our own use and presents for friends.

Congratulations to husband on his achievements, including the realisation that protective gear might be a good idea...

*Grin* I'm glad he listened to me. Maybe his reluctance to spend money is partly down to me so I really wanted to put that right.

Wow, quite exciting. I bet that honey is amazing, and hopefully worth all the stings!

That's quite fascinating, in a slightly worrying way - and congratulations on all that honey!

I'm finding the whole process fascinating. Yes, it can be scary when the bees get angry but hubby seems to cope. He's not that bothered about the stings, really. He's more worried about me because I have post mastectomy lymphodema and a sting could really make it worse, hence him wanting me to be well out of the way while he dealt with the couple of tenacious bees who had followed him into the house.

I think as he gets more confident in dealing with the bees they will be less agressive. Hence my encouraging him to buy a good quality protective suit instead of relying on cobbled together stuff.
