Royal vs Sarkozy - The view from the front line

Quote from a French friend, the owner of Timeshare Dog, when asked who she intended to vote for in Sunday’s final round of the French Presidential Elections.

“I have not made up my mind.  The choice is between bubonic plague and cholera.”

Having watched both candidates slug it out in a televised debate on Wednesday I can’t say I envy her the choice ( Read more... )

Hmmm, that's a point.

I can vote in UK elections but I would have to register in my former home town of Reading. Since, after four years' absence I've lost touch with local issues, I'd feel a bit of a fraud doing so and I've not bothered. However, if I did I'd find it hard to make a choice. Probably end up voting Monster Raving Loony if they still field a candidate in Reading. They used to.

Since, as everyone knows, the only news worth reporting is feel-good news about Americans, our news hasn't touched on the French elections, except for where it can make fun of them. Sigh. What are the major differences? Will much change one way or another, depending on who gets elected?

My personal view is if Sarkozy gets in, and manages to implement his programme, there will be quite an upheaval in French society. For a start he's promised to create exceptions to the 35 hours week, cut the number of civil servants quite drastically, reduce taxes, and exempt up to 95% of the population from inheritence tax. This is all radical stuff for France. If Royal gets in we're on the status quo, more or less.

If you're interested, the BBC website (www.bbc.co.uk) has a good summary of the candidates, their policies, and the issues.

Hello! I remember linking to your lj from junediamanti's lj one day, and the fact that you live in France stuck with me. I'm hijacking here with a potentially odd request:

My daughter and I are traveling in Spain, Italy and France next month with another mother/daughter (both girls are 14). We're taking a train from Barcelona to Paris over 3 days and plan 1-night stopovers in Carcassonne, near Lascaux and in the Loire Valley along the way.

Seeing as you run a B&B, are you familiar with lodging possibilities in any of those places that you would be willing to suggest? My email is shirley2allie @ hotmail.com (without the spaces) and any thoughts you have would be greatly - humongously - appreciated.

Thank you so much - Shirley
