I, too, have seen the new Star Trek, and wow it was awesome.

Trek aside, it was just a damn fun movie -- that it had these characters we know in it, felt like sort of an bonus treat thingy.

just a few spoilery thoughts and stuff )

I just now got back from seeing it. I completely agree, although I thought that the old trek call-backs were a bit forced.

ZQ must have spent ages studying Nimoy's Spock because he had it down cold, even to the body language. I completely bought him as spock, he and the character who played Scotty (who I can't be bothered to look up right now) are the two who I just bought as *being* Spock and Scotty, the others were more cool caracters that just happened to have the same names. Which is ok.

ZQ was phenomenal. And Simon Pegg as Scotty was great, too. That was the casting that sort of had me go "huh?", but man he really, really nailed the character.

Yeah, they each had their scenes, but not as much character development, but it really was the Kirk Spock show this time 'round. But, for the first time in forever, I'm really looking forward to seeing where they take this new version of the universe and characters.

Oh, I totally hate you seeing it in IMAX. Wasn't it great? So well done, and the music was brilliant. I actually stayed to the end to listen. I wanted more now!
I was trying to remember, though. They did change the original beginning? I can't remember if Kirk's dad really did die.

Spock Prime tells Kirk that George Kirk lived to see Kirk take command of the Enterprise in the Delta Vega scene.

He did. But I don't remember if that's true, or if we even know it. It's been so long since I've seen and read Star Trek that I don't remember. *rolls eyes at self*

I think it's in Best Destiny, one of the novels. George Kirk gets very little play in TOS, unlike Sarek.
