Title: A Good Man.
Characters: Sawyer, Hurley.
Rating: Gen.
Disclaimer: Don't own 'em. Never will.
Notes: My humble offering for the lovely Queen alliecat8 who declared today to be Sawyer Appreciation Day. Sorry about the total lack of smut (and Jack) but it's late, I've just got back from a gig and this is the best that I could do. I hope it meets with your royal approval.

Hurley has been waiting all day for just the right moment, one when there is no one else around to hear what he has to say. He doesn’t get why Sawyer likes to keep people wary of him - why anyone would want hatred instead of friendship is something so alien to Hurley that he knows he will never understand it even if he did manage to get Sawyer to explain himself. But as that particular conversation is as likely to happen as Jack talking about the merits of chilling out and relaxing or Charlie talking about someone other than himself, Hurley figures Sawyer’s outlook on life will just have to remain a mystery to him and the least he can do is not let anyone know the secret about Sawyer that he knows.

It’s dusk before the bustle of the beachcamp dies down enough for Hurley to make his move. Sawyer is stretched out on the sand in front of his tent, enjoying the cool breeze that floats up from the water and Hurley wonders if Sawyer is asleep and so, maybe, he’s missed his chance. He’s thinking of walking away, trying again in the morning, when Sawyer opens his eyes and raises an eyebrow, his lips quirking into his familiar smile.

"Something you need, Staypuft?"

Hurley doesn’t flinch at the nickname, Sawyer’s jibes don’t bother him anymore. They did once, but no longer, not now he knows the truth.

"Listen, Dude. I’m just gonna say what I have to say and then turn around and leave. I’m not here to fight with you or ask you for anything, I just wanna tell you something you need to know."

Sawyer is looking at him quizzically, trying to work out what his angle is. Hurley takes a deep breath, tries to compose himself but the words still come out in a rush.

"I wouldn’t have spoken to her if it weren’t for you. I’m not all charming and smooth like you. I don’t have what you have and I never will. I don’t know why you decided to help me out. I guess you thought it would be funny, give you another chance to laugh at the fat guy, but you made me think I had a chance with her and you were right dude, I did. She’s gone now and that sucks but I really liked her and I wouldn’t have told her that if you hadn’t called out her name when you did and I wanted to thank you. You’re a good guy really dude, you just don’t let people see that and you should ‘cos it’s cool to have friends and I bet people would really like you if you just gave them a chance."

Hurley turns away quickly as soon as he finishes speaking, He doesn’t want to see Sawyer’s reaction to his words, he doesn’t want to get into a fight with the guy - he just wanted to let him know that he is appreciated even if he doesn’t want to be.

"Hey. Hurley."

Hurley stops in his tracks and turns back, smiling to himself because, for once, Sawyer used his name. Sawyer has something in his hand and he waves it in the air for an instant before throwing it in Hurley’s direction. Hurley fumbles a little when he catches it - he was never that good at sports back in High School. It’s a box of Dharma cookies, the ones that Sawyer loves the most and Hurley knows that they are all the thanks he is going to get. But they are more than enough.

"Thanks, dude."

Hurley grins at Sawyer and Sawyer smiles back before he turns and retreats inside his tent. And for just a moment Hurley wishes there had been more people around to hear him, so that they could learn the truth about Sawyer too.
