It's been a long three weeks going on a month when DG wasn't there - a long three confusing, bewildering weeks when nothing felt quite right. Like going through life with a blind spot and not even knowing it ( Read more... )

It had only been three weeks, but, between the void in her memories and the city's changeable seasons, DG felt as if she had been out of commission for much longer than that. Consequently, she wanted to know exactly what she'd missed and what had changed.

The Northern Island seemed to be the same. Hundreds of empty rooms protected with dust sheets, dozens of rooms that contained memories that were just out of reach and, tucked away among the rest of them, the rooms that she and Glitch inhabited. Her sketches on the walls and Glitch's half completed inventions on the tables. Apples in the bowl on the kitchen table. Her bike ... was probably at the workshop, actually. She should see if that was still there.

As she pulled on her jacket and set off across the bridge, however, she spotted a familiar figure heading towards her. She beamed, forgetting about her bike and running to give Cain an enthusiastic hug of greeting instead.

"Cain! What took you so long?"

She'd expected him hours ago.

Sometimes Cain wondered if he'd ever had as much energy when he was DG's age; it made him smile fondly, and he returned the hug with the firm squeeze of his right arm.

"I thought we agreed on afternoon coffee." Which is exactly it, and also avoiding the question, which is a bad thing. Especially with his friends.

"I was helping out at the birdhouse. Hauling furniture, lost track of time."

Meanwhile Glitch was fussing around the parlor after finally having settled on an outfit: light brown trousers and sage green henley shirt with the top buttons undone and sleeves pushed up, showing scars he didn't feel like hiding anymore. Relaxed, casual, comfortable, honest, exactly the mood he wanted to set.

Now if only he could stop fussing with the snacks and things. He promised himself one more carrot stick and one more sip of pear brandy and one more glance at the record player as he debated whether they wanted music or not.

ooc: yeah he'll be over there, you guys carry on for now.

"We did," she admitted, "But you could have arrived early. It's been a long time, remember?"

Three weeks that had felt like months, thanks to the way that season varied from day to day. DG had disappeared in the summer and returned to snow storms.

"How is the birdhouse?" she asked, with eager curiosity, "Nearly finished?"

Something else that she'd need to check up on and catch up on.
