There were a couple days this week that went achingly slowly, but really, here we are again at Friday already! I love the weekend nowadays. I get at least one day when I can sleep in as late as I want, or at least as late as my body will let me. Which is usually about 8:30. ~shrugs~
So, good things:
1. Work was interesting this week. Doing historical research and getting paid to do so (as opposed to getting paid to teach) is a new and wonderous thing. I have the parameters of the project pretty well mapped out; at least as well mapped out as one can get before actually doing the bulk of the primary source research (I said "primary source" just for
pokeystar, though I suspect others on my flist will also find their hearts beating faster at the term). Next week, I get to start going through our photograph collection and choosing which ones might work best in an exhibit. I also have to start making lists of those images we do not own the rights to so that we can pursue those. Unfortunately, we have very poor records on the copyrights for our image collection. That is going to be a challenge, but an interesting one.
2. Worked 40 hours this week and will get paid for 40 hours. It's lovely knowing that ones wages are actually fully included in the office's budget. For now.
3. Watched Torchwood: Children of Earth and adored it. I haven't seen compelling television like that in a long time. When I finish mourning the loss (one probably more permanent than the other) of certain characters, I will definitely watch it again.
4. To my good fortune, the wonderful
firefly_124 rec'd some great CoE fix-it fics for me. One in particular,
Everywhere is Walking Distance, If You Have the Time, is absolutely amazing. Firefly is in a state of "gah!" now because she's been lured into writing Torchwood fic, but I am delighted by the possibilities of what she's working on.
5. I also recently read
copperbadge's entry for The TARDIS Big Bang,
Sing Morning Out of Night, which I also plan to re-read. Sam is an astonishingly prolific young man who also happens to write really good stuff (in several fandoms & o-fic). I just started reading an original novel he wrote called Nameless, which is on one of his LJs (he has several), but which can also be downloaded in PDF for free
here. Yes, I believe that I'm fangurling Sam.
6. I had dinner and went to see Billy Elliot last night with my uncle, who's in town from Chicago. We had dinner at a wonderful, but massively expensive, upscale Greek restaurant in the theater district before the show. The expense was not a big deal for my uncle, but it's so far out of my price range that looking at the bill was a shock to the system. To be fair to the restaurant (which was outstanding): they fly the fish and seafood in fresh daily from Greece. The mind boggles. The taste buds did, however, shout "hooray!" The show was terrific. The boy who played Billy (they rotate among 4 boys, the show is so dance intensive) was a fantastic dancer, though just an OK singer. I am not a person who usually goes out for musicals, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great cast, dynamic set design, wonderful dancing. Especially by the gentleman who played Older Billy in a scene where the kid and his older self dance together. His thigh muscles and, um, other things were really, really, really firm. I don't think I was the only one in the audience focusing on his attributes rather than the pair of them dancing during that number. ~fans self~
This weekend is packed. On Saturday night my cousins are throwing a party for their dad, my cousin Nate, with whom I stayed for a long while when I first moved back to this area and who just turned 80 (and who does NOT look or act it, let me tell ya). My parents are flying in from Cleveland tonight and my sister and #1 niece, Maddie, are coming in tomorrow. My uncle is staying in the city tonight & I'll pick him up from the train in Hoboken tomorrow. I am chauffeur. Honestly, I don't know which excites me more: the party, which has drawn all my cousins from that side of the family, or the fact that I get to share a hotel room with Maddie (and my sister)! I haven't had Maddie time in too long.
Later that same evening...
Picked up my parents. They were early; I was late. I turned back toward Jersey City out of the airport rather than in the direction of my cousins' town. Brilliant.
Now, I'm in a hotel with a big bed, free internet, major air conditioning, and I just spent 15 minutes watching the Joan Rivers roast on Comedy Central with my parents. What does one say while listening to multiple jokes about vaginas with one's mother and father in the room?
G'night, folks.
