They departed as the sun fell low in the sky, landing the jet several miles from the base and making their way on foot. They sighted the dam just as the sun was peeking over the horizon, golden rays beginning to filter through the rich green of the pine forest and glinting off of snow

He would have most likely relished in the beauty, but there was a thick ball of nerves rolling in the pit of his stomach during their travels. On one hand, he hoped Stryker was there, and that they could end this once and for all. On the other hand, he was deathly afraid that something would happen.

Something far worse than what happened before Christmas.

He narrowed his eyes, and scanned the immediate area for thoughts from anyone. There were some distant ones, most likely in the town a hundred or so miles away. Charles focused harder.

And then there was something more.

Charles nodded. "There are quite a few here. Underground."

After another long moment, Charles' eyes grew. He knew that voice.

"Darwin." he whispered.

"Darwin?" Erik's eyes narrowed, glancing at the base and then at Charles. "We were told he was killed."

He didn't answer at first, only pinpointed their lost friend's thoughts for a moment longer before he glanced at his friend.

"It's him, Erik, and he isn't far, maybe a few yards east and a few hundred feet down below the surface."

"If they have prisoners, then the base is active," Erik said. "Can you tell if there are any other mutants?"
