I just finished Agota Kristof's "Notebook" trilogy, sometimes called the "Body of Lies" trilogy. Hungarian-born & raised, nationally French author. You can read the first few chapters online with Google Books, to make sure you like it. The second and third books are written in a notable different style (or, at least, my copy had different translators for all three, despite being in one volume), but they retain the feeling throughout.
