A year to the day, Amy and Rory ask to be taken back to Venice. They want to have a laugh, they tell him, explore the sights they didn’t get to see when they were fighting vampires. Fish from space, he reminds them, as he obliges, setting the coordinates ( ... )

She’s standing and flicking through one of the children’s books, and when he comes closer he can see the title: The Three Little Goslings. “For a friend of yours?” he asks, even though he knows.

When she looks up, she pushes a smile, and he notices her looking at the tweed jacket, the bowtie, the dust on his hands from his tour through the shelves, and he can tell she thinks he’s nothing but a sales clerk. He’s safe. “My brother. I’m the only one he lets tell him bedtime stories. He loves The Three Little Pigs; thought I’d give him another version. S’pose I got off easy-most boys his age hate having big sisters. ‘Long as I read to him about the Big Bad Wolf, I’m safe ( ... )

That last biiiiiit. This is probably one of my favourite Eleven/Rose interactions ever, simply for the fact that she doesn't know its him, and you put the quote in SEAMLESSLY. I love how it works on kind of a metaphorical level too for the Doctor. She might have left him but the fact that he remembers her always means she's never going to leave him, not really.

Thank you so, SO much for filling my prompt, this was just gorgeous.

I'm so glad you liked it! This one went through a bit more agonizing than usual; I kept backspacing and rewriting. After seeing "Let's Kill Hitler" and getting full confirmation that Eleven still thinks about Rose, my brain has just not wanted to leave that thought, and I just needed to get this image in my head down. I really enjoyed writing this one; thank you for the prompt!!

I like that you wrote this so that Rose is the one saying she won't leave him, even if he's always leaving her. Am I crazy to be bothered by the canon reference in HN - the one in John Smith's journal that mentions Rose walking away. Shouldn't it say, "she's always ... separated from me, against her will - either by me or nefarious forces." ;)

He lets his hand brush her shoulder for an instant only, a fleeting reassurance, and she turns to look back at him for only a second. For that second, he thinks he might be imagining it-a flash of recognition, an almost-asked question-but she turns, pays for the book, and leaves the store.

Aches for both of them ...

Oh, oh, oh. That was so good. Eleven just sneaking a chat just because she's Rose and she's tired and she's dressed inappropriately for the weather and Rose maybe-but-not-really catching on. That was so good.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it; thank you! I really wanted to work with that idea: him knowing he shouldn't talk to her, but not being able to resist once he really saw the toll dimension-hopping took on her.

LOVE this, bb - both parts.

Donna had told him once, after they’d hashed out what had happened in the alternate timeline, about the woman she’d run into on the street the night she’d left-the tired-looking blonde girl in the blue leather jacket. When she’d said tired, he’d pictured a lack of sleep, not a certain defeat in the curve of her shoulders, the set of her jaw, the sadness in her eyes, visible even from a distance.

It PAINED me - still does - to see Rose in Turn Left. I'm glad Eleven can't help but go to her when he sees her this way.

Oh, "Turn Left". I love that episode to pieces but it seriously does make my heart ache. When I wrote my "Turn Left"-era Rose fic for the open challenge earlier this summer, rewatching segments of the episode really broke my heart; I always burst into tears when she comes running and says so faintly, "I came so far..."

For me, what seals how much she's been through is the look on her face in "Partners in Crime", which was what I was referring to there. She looks so tired, so worn, and even if she must know that the Doctor can't be far away, she can't go to him. I was also slightly bothered by that line in HN about her walking away, until I saw this piece of fanart and realized that maybe he was dreaming of her walking away in that moment, or in others where perhaps he glimpsed her but couldn't be sure--they had to have kept just missing each other, or so I imagined when I wrote my fic (I had her see Eight but not go to him and just miss Eleven).

And there's that other line--"She will not answer me, and she keeps walking away." If ( ... )
