All you want is her eyes on you
All you need is one hand deep inside
Outside the wind she's screaming
The windows shake and you cry

Impressions. Like the sink of his body onto the jump seat. Like the feel of the Tardis under his feet. Like the tears that still stain his cheeks.

Rose.

She is only an impression now. Under his skin, he feels her. His hearts beat and still quicken with the memory of her; gone only moments, yet an eternity is in a moment for him.

Eternity. Without Rose. Unfathomable.

Daleks. Again. He feels the hate once again boil the blood in his veins. And no Rose to temper it. She had made her decision to stay with him and in the heat of the moment, in the heat of battle, he was selfishly delighted.

Then it went off. The lever pulled the wrong way. His last sight of her: hair whipping around her face, arms outstretched for him and her screams as she was pulled into the void. Then Pete, blessedly, catching her in his arms and she was gone.

Unacceptable.

He jumps up. It is unacceptable that this will be his last sight of her; his last memory. He needs one last chance to see her, to hear her, to tell her.

Dials and levers move beneath his hands as he searches for a spot in the vortex; a sliver of the rift that he can manipulate.

“Yes!” He yells aloud, though there is no one but the Tardis to hear him. He’s found what he needs. Another dial to spin and then he whispers, “Rose?” one more lever and again, “Rose?”

He’ll stay here. He will keep calling her until she hears him. Or he goes mad. “Rose. Rose. Rose.”

Finally, finally she is here. How long has he been waiting? Days? Weeks? An eternity in a moment. She is there, on a beach anticipating him.

“I’m burning up a sun just to say goodbye.” He tells her.

“You look like a ghost.” She replies. He is a ghost, to her. Untouchable. He is a projection of his body, his hearts. No longer can she hold his hand or share in his adventure; this part of his life. Two lifetimes she’s touched.

She looks beautiful, the wind whipping in her hair, the seaside air blushing her cheeks. This is how he will remember her.

“Bad Wolf Bay.” She is saying. That’s where she is; the irony is not lost for either of them.

She is safe here, with Mickey, Pete and her mum, with a baby on the way. She has what he should unselfishly want for her. Rose. Secure. Alive.

“There is Torchwood on this planet. I know a thing or two about aliens.”

He has to laugh. Rose wouldn’t take the easy route. Never. “Rose Tyler, defender of the Earth!” She has been, always.

“You’re dead. Back home.” He is telling her. “But here you are! Living your life, day to day.” His hearts beat a little faster at her tears as he says, “One adventure I can never have.”

Rose is openly crying now, “Am I ever going to see you again?”

“You can’t,” he says quietly. He will go back to his Tardis, alone as before. A few bright years with Rose, out of hundreds. But her memory is burned into him now. For this life and all his lives after.

She tries to tell him, he can feel his time is short, but she manages to say it, “I love you.”

Oh Rose. Rose. “Rose Tyler…” he wants to tell her too, this epiphany.

But he is on the Tardis, alone. Tears run down his face as he fully realizes she is gone. Truly gone. He buries his head in his hands to contemplate:

his loss,

the human heart,

Rose.

End.
