Amazing, the resources that go into the construction of these tunnels.. only for them to eventually be abandoned and sit as relics of the past.

Any particular reason they were abandoned? Did they need to widen the roadway? Tunnels are usually dug because that's the best path between two points; you'd think they wouldn't be so readily abandoned.

Yep. They needed to widen the roadway, and realized it would cost less to go around/over the mountains instead of trying to upgrade that section. So now there's an 11-mile section that's abandoned and used as a bike path.
