I'd say there isn't a contradiction. You don't have to fear something to respect it. If you're afraid of something, that will probably slow you down. I don't like to be slowed unnecessarily.

I wasn't suggesting that it was a contradiction (trust me ... I routinely stretch the above statement to the point of stupidity), it just the way you worded "I refuse to concentrate on fear" just after admitting that your weakness is overconfidence that I found funny.
