I say definitely both. =)
Personally I found that drugs/alcohol helped me discover that I could be more social, more relaxed, more confident, whatever.
But then I found out that I could be those things without the accompanying substances. I think MJK once said something like that drugs show you where you can go, and then it's up to you to get there yourself, without their help.
(And he's the lead singer of Tool, so he's probably an authority on drugs. ;D)
Anyway, those similarities and great qualities are surely in those people somewhere, since it's part of their personality. They may not show it while sober, but I think they certainly could.

I don't have that problem. I'm me all the time. I've discovered this leaves me with the label "full on" and to be honest, I'd rather be full on than in a repressed state of denial at who I truly am.

I think that any social construct (religion, norms, etc) provides large-scale repression of some sort. Is it avoidable? I don't know, but I don't think so. Indeed, you don't seem to feel the need to repress yourself (from what I've seen), probably because you have a very strong, beautiful personal identity.

I avoid it. maybe that's coz I'm a strong person. dunno about beautiful, I'd go for terrifying but whatever floats your boat.
I'd like to believe I'm a nice person, though. even if some of the people of this city are determined to paint me as a monster.
