Bolly's ability to immediately obtain a stacked plate of sausage rolls at any gathering that offered them was unparalleled. His present for Sylvie, a large crocheted soft toy snake with button eyes, felt tongue, and a tickle-triggered animation charm that made it wriggle when you scratched its head, had taken him until basically the last second to finish, and he felt he deserved a reward.

For show, there was a box of Scottish sweets-tablet, tea cakes, shortbread, Edinburgh rock, macaroon bars and so on-in the pile of presents for Sylvie to open. Aubrey was carrying her actual present, which required an explanation not for public ears, in a small box in his pocket. They’d been blessed with a really nice day so, instead of making any actual effort to complete his task, Aubrey took up a handy blanket corner and sprawled out to get some sun.

Aubrey cracks open an eye and then both to look properly. “Huh. Fuzzy snake.” He reaches out to touch it and accidentally triggers the animation charm, so a wriggle goes down the whole length. “…okay, that is actually pretty cool.”
