[CHARACTER INFO]
CHARACTER NAME: Theodore “Teddy” Altman aka Hulkling
FANDOM: Marvel Comics: Young Avengers
CHRONOLOGY: Post Siege, Pre Children’s Crusade
CLASS: Hero
SUPERHERO NAME: Hulkling
ALTER EGO: Teddy Altman

BACKGROUND:
Teddy Altman’s life started out in space on the planet Tarnax IV. The home planet of an alien race called the Skrulls. They were at war with another race of aliens known as the Kree. During one incident in the war, the hero of the Kree known as Mar-Vell…also the Earth-based superhero Captain Marvel…and Princess Anelle of the Skrull fell in love. Anelle had a child with Mar-Vell but when his half-breed status was discovered, the child was ordered executed by his own grandfather the Emperor. To keep Teddy safe, Anelle ordered one of her servants to take Teddy to his father on Earth. The only problem was that Mar-Vell had died, leaving Teddy in the care of the Skrull woman who assumed the identity of Sara Altman.

Teddy didn’t know any of this though. He grew up an only child of a single mother that worked in real estate, told his father died of cancer before he was born. Growing up in New York, he idolized superheroes like Captain America. He went to a private, Episcopal school until it was time for high school. It was at this time that he started to realize he had powers and due to the timing, assumed they were mutant in origin.

Teddy used his powers to fit in at school, making himself more muscular and more like the popular kids. He quickly became the best friend of the captain of the basketball team who also happened to be the class president and the guy Teddy had a crush on. For awhile, Teddy just quietly went along blending in and being popular. He didn’t take part in the bullying the others enjoyed but he didn’t do anything to stop it.

When Teddy felt close enough to Greg to reveal his powers, life changed. Greg prodded Teddy into abusing his powers. Teddy would shapeshift into the likes of Tony Stark to get them into A-list parties or superheroes like the Hulk just for amusement. When Greg tried to get Teddy to help him loot the recently abandoned Avengers mansion, Teddy took a stand against him and threatened him if he tried to steal anything. Greg ran off and Teddy was pretty sure his life was over. He couldn’t have been more wrong. Iron Lad appeared, locating Teddy because he was part of the ‘Avengers Failsafe Program’ and recruited him to the Young Avengers along with Patriot and Wiccan (Asgardian at the time) who he started dating.

Things were good for awhile, Teddy taking the ‘Hulkling’ name and enjoying training and hanging out with his new little adopted family. It didn’t last long though as a series of super-events rained down. Battling Kang the Conqueror, being forced to disband the team by the Avengers, losing two teammates, and then getting ambushed by the Super Skrull.

The Super Skrull tried to kidnap Teddy, claiming he was a Skrull too. After a short battle, Teddy and his friends fled to the safest place they could think of, Billy Kaplan’s apartment. It wasn’t so safe, Teddy’s mother there waiting for them. The Super Skrull showed up shortly afterwards, blasting down a wall and holding Patriot hostage. He used a device to try to prove Teddy was a skrull by forcing him into his ‘default’ shape. It didn’t work on Teddy but changed Teddy’s mother to her skrull form.

After revealing the truth about Teddy’s Skrull heritage, Sara Altman attacked the Super Skrull only to be killed. In the chaos of the little fight, the Super Skrull grabbed Teddy and fled.

When Teddy regained consciousness, he was restrained. The Super Skrull revealed the truth about just who Teddy’s parents were the true origins of his powers. Before anything else could happen, the rest of the Young Avengers showed up to save the day. Soon after that, a squad of Kree soldiers showed up, blasted the Super Skrull and then tried to force Teddy to join the Kree military because his father was Kree. After a short battle, the Young Avengers took the Super Skrull and flee in the Kree shuttle.

While traveling, the Super Skrull revealed more of Teddy’s origins to him and Billy as well as revealing that Billy was the son of the Scarlet Witch. Soon enough, more Skrulls and Kree showed up and started a fight over who’d get Teddy. He tried to get them to stop killing one another but had no luck. Then the Avengers showed up and there were some negotiations. They broke down quickly, Patriot being critically wounded and rushed to the hospital while Avengers and Young Avengers teamed up to fight the alien armies.

The conflict was resolved with a clever trick from Teddy. He and the Super Skrull shifted into one another, Super Skrull leaving Earth while Teddy remained behind to stay with the Young Avengers. He and the rest of the newly reassembled team had a memorial service in the statue garden at the Avengers Mansion before jetting off to stop some villains from destroying the United Nations.

Then the Civil War happened. Teddy and the others were briefly arrested by SHIELD but Captain America broke them out and recruited them to the Secret Avengers, resisting the SHRA. Briefly during the threat, Teddy and the other Young Avengers went to California to try recruiting and helping out the Runaways. There, he, Billy, and two the Runaways were kidnapped and experimented on by The Warden of the Cube, an illegal prison for aliens. Teddy learned there that his internal organs would shift to protect him from harm even while unconscious. Thanks to Xavin of the Runaways and a timely rescue attempt by the rest of both teams, Teddy and the others escaped. Some time later, Teddy was sent on a mission to knock out and replace Hank Pym who was working for the Pro-Registration forces. He freed the imprisoned Anti-Registration heroes while in this disguise, bypassing all the Pro-reg security.

During Civil War, Captain Mar Vell apparently returned to life but it turned out he’d just been plucked out of the time stream. Thankfully, Teddy had a chance to finally meet the father he never knew. It was a heartwarming meeting and Mar Vell promised to come see Teddy again but it never actually happened. Secret Invasion got in the way. Hulkling and the rest of the Young Avengers were the first line of defense when the invading army landed in Time Square. The Young Avengers ended up teaming up with the Runaways again, specifically, Teddy, Billy, Speed, and Xavin getting chased down by assassins sent to kill Teddy because of his royal blood. He spent a lot of the event being guilt tripped for not going into space to assume his rightful place as Skrull Emperor but Teddy eventually responded by just knocking his enemy out. He took part in the big final battle in Central Park, learning afterwards about just how bad of shape the Skrulls were in and getting another guilt trip.

After Secret Invasion, there was Dark Reign. The Young Avengers continued being heroes and Teddy kept dating Billy. Norman Osborn tried to replace the Young Avengers with the Young Masters of Evil but Teddy and his team defeated both the Young Masters and the Dark Avengers, Teddy even getting to punch Daken out. At the climax of the Dark Reign, there was the Seige. Asgard was literally punched out of the sky and sent crashing to Earth. After making an amazing entrance with the rest of the Avengers, Teddy went off with Billy to rescue the injured and get them out of he rubble and ended up helping to fight off a bunch of superhuman looters.

After the Seige, Teddy and the rest of the Young Avengers were finally welcomed into the Avengers Mansion for training and as a part of the team.

PERSONALITY:
At one time, Teddy was quiet and unassuming. He stood back, changing himself and conforming to fit in. Even if he felt like he shouldn’t be doing it, he’d even turn his back on people that needed help just to keep from drawing attention to himself. He was scared and made sure he didn’t draw any bullying to himself. He knew he was incredibly different and just wanted to be normal. Eventually he reached a breaking point though, finally standing up and finally getting a chance to be himself.

He’s generally a cheerful and outgoing young man, gaining a reputation as ‘The Polite Hulk’. He prefers to let others lead but will step up when he feels he needs to. Generally, he tries to resolve disputes as quickly and reasonably as possible, working to prevent as much damages as he can. He’s not a particular fan of fighting or conflict but on the flip side, won’t deny that sometimes beating up the villains makes him feel better if he’s in a bad mood. He’s an honest, kind young man that’s very supportive and accepting of others. Honest, he’s a good listener and sees no point in hiding things like that anymore. Teddy likes to ease tension when he can, trying to keep things friendly and casual when he’s able. He’s a firm believer that superheroes, especially Avengers and Young Avengers do not kill. He was even willing to spare Warden of the Cube after the man not only cut him up like a lab experiment but tortured his boyfriend. He didn’t even wish harm or revenge on the Super Skrull after Kl’rt kidnapped him and killed his mother.

He’s a skilled actor, able to mimic people quite well with the aid of his powers to better imitate and impersonate people when he needs to. He often pretends to be a lot meaner and more intimidating than he really is while in his ‘Hulkling’ form in order to intimidate the bad guys. Teddy is also very loyal and protective, willing to put himself between those he cares about and danger. Teddy doesn’t think twice about throwing himself between danger and people that need protecting, willing to take hits even if he didn’t have his healing factor and durability. He wants to protect and help people and it’s why he’s a superhero aside from being a big Avengers fanboy. Teddy is also very firm and steady in his beliefs, willing to stand up to the Avengers he’s idolized since a kid to stick to them. When he learned the truth of who his parents were, Teddy was only briefly doubting himself before he quickly confirmed to himself that none of it changed who he was. He’s very secure in the knowledge that he knows who he is as a person and accepts who and what he is without turmoil or struggle. He also has absolutely no desire to claim the Skrull throne or join the Kree Army as their new hero. He’s adamant that he’s from Earth and not some prince, getting annoyed when people try to force that responsibility on him. Teddy grew up a geek, admitting to being a pokemon fan and looking up to the Avengers. He looks to them as role models but he isn’t afraid to stand up to them if he feels he has to.

Even though he based his heroic ID off the Hulk, Teddy is usually calm and reasonable. He’ll rarely get mad but if Billy is harmed or threatened, he’ll get VERY angry and lash out violently. The other side of his protectiveness is that he can sometimes be a bit reckless or overconfident himself, rushing into conflicts and situations he’d easily yell at any of the others for thinking of. While he is incredibly supportive of all his friends and views them as his family, he won’t hesitate to point out when he thinks things are wrong and need to be stopped, especially if it’s Billy that’s doing something he thinks need to not happen. He can come off as a bit overprotective but does try to stop when he realizes he’s doing it. He’s got a little bit of teasing sarcasm in him mostly reserved for his friends, otherwise a quietly charming and confident young man.

POWER:
Shapeshifting- Thanks to being part Skrull, Teddy has the power to shapeshift anything about himself within biological reason. He can go all big, green, and muscular, grow wings to let him fly, or imitate any person he can think of. The usual skrull shapeshifting restrictions apply to him but he’s got a small advantage over the rest of the race as he’s immune to the basic ‘skrull scanners’ that would usually detect a member of his race. He can still be found out with magic, via scent, and via telepathy though.

Super Strength- From the kree side of Teddy’s family tree, Teddy has super strength. It’s a pretty basic power and he’s strong enough to go toe-to-toe with the likes of Ben Grimm and hold his own. He thankfully knows how to pull his punches so he’s not using more strength than he needs to.

Regeneration- Another benefit of being part skrull that’s enhanced by his unique genetics is that Teddy’s able to heal himself. He’s not Wolverine but he can heal from damage a lot faster than any normal person. His organs will even move around to protect him even if he’s unconscious.

So this is the City? Looks kind of like New York but different in a few ways. I thought it might be but I went to where I live and it’s definitely not the same place I thought it would be. Does that mean this is an alternate universe? [He pauses, one can almost hear the frown.]…There aren’t any other guys named Hulkling running around here are there? Because I met another me from a different universe before and just wondering if I might be in his world now. Wouldn’t really surprise me if I was.

Can anyone tell me how I got here and how I can get back? Did that computer I talked to do this? The cliche evil laugh makes me think it did but better ask to be sure, ya know? If I said 'Open the pod bay doors Hal' and it said 'I'm afraid I can't do that’...that would have been really creepy. [He gives a little laugh.] At least this isn’t out in the middle of space. And I don’t even know if its name is Hal. Maybe Hallie since it sounded like a girl.

Anyway…name’s Hulkling…which you probably could guess by what I already said. And I was just with my team and I’m wondering if any of them are here too? We’re the Young Avengers. Patriot, Speed, Stature, Vision…the young one, Hawkeye…the female one, and Wiccan… I’d appreciate it if anyone’d let me know if they’re around please.

[There’s a short pause.]

Does this place need some help? I’m just trying to figure out why a computer or whoever’s responsible for bringing me here would need heroes from other places. Did something really bad happen? What’s the story with this place?

LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:

Teddy smiled as he slipped out of bed, careful not to wake Billy up. Neither of them were really ‘morning people’ but Billy tended to be a little grumpier. For a few moments, Teddy just stood there looking at the other hero, smiling. Even with his hair a mess and hogging all the blankets, Billy was adorable to Teddy. There were days the blond still couldn’t believe he was lucky enough to have him. There were even some days where Teddy wasn’t entirely sure he deserved having a boyfriend like Billy. Usually it was when he thought about when he was still Greg’s friend. How he had pretended to be what he wasn’t and just turned a blind eye on all the people Greg and the others bullied and mistreated. And how he’d abused his shapeshifting to sneak him and Greg into parties or just to impersonate people like Johnny Storm or the Hulk. That sort of mood never lasted long thankfully.

With another smile, Teddy leaned down to place a soft kiss on Billy’s head then made his way into the bathroom to get ready for the day. He paused at the mirror when he saw he’d shifted in his sleep and shook his head. He watched as his hair re-organized itself and the red he’d shifted to went back to the natural blond. One thing Teddy loved about his powers was that they made getting ready in the mornings so much easier. No need to brush his hair or shave. He’d toyed with the idea of various different kind of facial hair before but in the end he and Billy decided they all looked too ridiculous and were ‘too scratchy’ so Teddy’s face stayed smooth.

By the time Teddy had finished his shower, brushing his teeth, and getting dressed, Billy was up and mumbling about mornings in that way where only Teddy seemed to be able to understand him. The blond shook his head as he watched Billy shuffle into the bathroom. He started to make the bed and pick up the pieces of their costume they’d shed the night before. He liked to keep places neat, a bit of a habit of his. He’d done a good share of the cleaning when he was still living with his mother and the habit stuck. Really, he thought it was relaxing to get a little straightening up done.

Flicking the TV on, Teddy carefully folded the cape Billy liked so much and draped it over the back of a nearby chair. He paused when he saw the news. Super villains trying to rob a bank that was only a few blocks away. And right there on screen was Cassie. Almost on cue, Teddy’s cellphone started buzzing away and emitting the ringtone signaling that Kate was calling.

Teddy sighed and picked up his costume. He sent a quick ‘on our way’ text to Kate and then walked over to knock on the bathroom door.

“Billy? We’ve got trouble,” he called, smiling as he got just the reaction he expected out of Billy.

“Bad day to be a bad guy,” Teddy chuckled, starting to go green and pull his costume on.
