I found that when UPS left my package at a neighbor's over Christmas, but failed to show it as delivered on tracking for over a week while I was out of town, the only thing that got them to actually talk to the driver and figure out where my package had been left were the words "my lawyer" being mentioned several times in quick succession. Suddenly I was speaking to a vice president and they figured out where it was within an hour.
If I were you, I would write a letter to your company, detailing FedEx's mistakes, their unhelpful attitude, and suggesting that your company change its preferred carrier to UPS or one of their competitors, and copy Maria M. and Fed Ex Customer Service on the letter.
There's no excuse for them not to have knocked on your door when making the final delivery. I have found that occurring more and more often with these delivery services -- where someone is home, waiting for a package, and they don't bother knocking to deliver it.
