Your ancestors were from Russia? And from where exactly, do you know? Do you still have any relatives here?
I'm asking, because it's so interesting. I'm always happy to find connections between people living not only in different countries but on different continents... ;)
Yes! Ancestors from Russia on my dad's side. Might still be some there for all I know. I wish there was a way to find out.
My great-grandmother was Russian but born on the Austrian-Hungarian border. She was a stowaway on a ship to the States when she was a young girl, around the early 1900s. She spoke Russian and very little English so I began teaching myself to speak it when I was about 13 years old. Later (much later) I took a non-credit 1 semester course in Russian. Unfortunately, very little of it "stuck" as I've had no chance to practice with anyone.
Here's something interesting which could lead to finding a relative or two; I have inherited a genetic mutation causing thrombophilia through my dad (my sister has it too). It's called Prothrombin gene mutation, Factor II. Only a certain percentage of the population has it, and they've all (last time I checked into the research that is) originated from the same area. So, if anyone in Russia would have this, chances are we're distant cousins.
