A few days ago, I woke up to the deep noise of an engine. Fuzzily, as I blinked the sleep out of my eyes, my brain strove to identify the sound. Not a car, too deep and loud for that. A plane? But that would have to be flying much too low. Suddenly, sleep left me as a finger of anxiety gave me a sharp jab in the stomach. Rationality and reason ( Read more... )

I am happy to say that, since becoming an adult, there have been very few real moments of fear in my life, but I don't think I will ever completely forget the cold sweat, lump in my throat, hollow in my belly, hair standing up on my arms, clanging DANGER thought in the back of my brain, that I grew up w/ every time my father "went off". I aim to never have to experience that sort of real fear again.

Of course, that isn't to say that I don't enjoy a good coaster...

I tend to agree with you, that we dont know "anything" about FEAR.. nobody that was born here, who's parents were born here... could truly understand (i dont think anyway) what its like to flee a war torn country... to run into bomb shelters frequently like pavlovs dog, to dig through tsunami wreckage, or to wonder if your friend or relative has been killed for their religion or ethnicity (or a whole slew of other reasons in this world of irrational murder ( ... )
