Throughout life I have continued learning as I experience new things and see the world through what I hope is a clearer lens. Every so often my perspective shifts in a significant way. Though the shifts in perspective may sometimes seem dramatic I can see that the changes are a logical progression that fits within the overall pattern that ( Read more... )

Interesting, Russ, but a little disconcerting, as I recall you being fairly libertarian. Who decides in what direction "mankind" needs to go? If it's to become a benevolent force, why must it be dominant? For the record, I don't worry about abstracts like "mankind." There are only individuals, who are my concern. Individuals should be free to go their own way, for better or worse, as long as they're not harming anyone except perhaps themselves. What would you be willing to do if they don't want to go in the direction you believe they should? You can't get to a freer, happier world (a goal I share) by dragging people there.

You are correct. You cannot drag people into a freer happier world. And whatever is done to push towards this must be done by individuals and respect the fundamental tenants of individual freedom. As a stong proponent of individual freedom I have no interest in forcing anyone to do anything however it is well within the limits of personal freedom to try to convince people to engage in personal responsibility.

As far as who decides which direction mankind should go that will be the sum of all the directions individuals push it in. For my part I'd like the direction I push to be thought out and positive. Additionally I'd like to convince more people to do the same. I think this is all part of being a responsible individual.

Okay, we're in agreement, then. I just wanted to make sure you were still disavowing coercive means. Whew! :-)

Maybe you should run for some small office Russ. Enter politics and try and make a change on a local level and see if you can rise up. 3rd party is more and more acceptable and libertarian is the predomininant one out there.

I'd vote for you.
