I think this is happening in Ohio (Illinois?, Utah? one of those midwest places), where there has been a sort of one-upmanship first among cities and then among counties to restrict the living arrangements of sex offenders (note: not *violent* sex offenders, so there's a lot of unanticipated things in here). It's to the point where many have difficulty finding a place to live other than a car. Search it if you're curious, there was a story in the NYT, IIRC.
Sec. 34-1. Heads of households to maintain firearms. (a) In order to provide for the emergency management of the city, and further in order to provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants, every head of household residing in the city limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition therefor. (b) Exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who suffer a physical or mental disability which would prohibit them from using such a firearm. Further exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who are paupers or who conscientiously oppose maintaining firearms as a result of beliefs or religious doctrine, or persons convicted of a felony.
Also, it's not just bus stops. It's "areas where minors congregate." All public and private parks and recreation facilities, playgrounds, skating rinks, neighborhood centers, gymnasiums, bus stops, and all other places established for the public to congregate and wait for public transportation. And for good measure, any child care facility, church, or school.
Also, the current "bus stop" law is being blocked by a federal judge, with the ruling to be handed down on July 11.
Hooray! Thanks to pickle for making the world a saner place for once. I had not been informed of the exception, and really, am rather glad to know that you can except yourself for personal beliefs as well.
The sex offender bit is still a bit disturbing, even if the bus stop bit is struck down. At times like this I always think about that guy that got "Sex Offender" status because after a 12yr old girl jumped in front of his car, he grabbed her shoulder and yelled at / sternly talked to her about how she almost got herself killed, which is apparently enough to qualify for "Unlawful Restraint of a Minor."
