Robb had heard news already of the strange mist, but otherwise it had been a fairly uneventful day. The highlight had been taking Reynald around the huts to get sweets.
Which is why he has no warning when he walks into a cloud of mist and an arrow whistles past his ear.
It was the bodies that struck Davos first. So many bodies, men, woman and children littered around the throne and he was stopped in his tracks for a moment in pure horror.
"Will you not come closer, Onion Knight?" the red woman taunted him in a voice that still made his skin crawl. "Come and bow to your King."
And Davos came forward as he was bidden, head bowed and he hoped only to look into his King's eyes and see something he still recognized.
There's so much chaos, and it grips Robb's heart and gut and twists them. Walder Frey's cold laughter, his mother's pleading screams, the infernal howl of his wolf. He staggers through the mist, and it seems to move with him--and then there is another kind of laughter, another sight, another would-be King.
If the body's shifted into Northmen and River Lords as Robb came closer, Davos did not notice it, no more than he noticed the turned over tables and dishes that started appearing on the ground around him.
His eyes were all on his King.
"So my Smuggler," Stannis said in a voice that made Davos' heart fall, "it seems Melisandre has given me the victory you could not."
"But there are still more traitors to deal with," he added with a sigh and Davos suddenly realized he could hear footsteps approaching and turned around.
