I know at least one of you are interested in this, and the fact that I (mis)quote SPARKLEDAMMERUNG as an academic source has to make some of you curious. So I present ( Read more... )

Oh God, this is the best thing ever. I hope your prof appreciates this as much as I do.

I have just started watching True Blood because I need more trashy vampire fiction in my life (I read the first two Sookie Stackhouse books and hated them). Is it actually good? I'm enjoying it so far, and the squicky sex scenes at least seem intentionally squicky as opposed to the manifestation of All of Charlene Harris' Issues in the books.

Shameful confession: My dream date with Zizek (why have I thought about this?) is to attend the premiere of Breaking Dawn while he whispers a Lacanian analysis of the birth scene in my ear.

yeah, the southern vampire mysteries are very very badly written. i like true blood a lot. season two is the best, i think, managing to put a bunch of christ mythology (theres this fantastic aslan moment) right next to dyonysian mystery cults, repression and abandon and mess and you spend half the time yelling at the characters, like you do in scary movies, don't go up the stairs, except it's more don't relinquish your will.

but season three has franklin and russel!

sookie is awesome but i also want to slap her, tara is my favourite and eric pwns everything. i love every character, at some point. it is also highly ridiculous and annoying. it's a good trashy vampire show.

to attend the premiere of Breaking Dawn while he whispers a Lacanian analysis of the birth scene in my ear.

oh dear. i had not thought of zizek in a sexual context at all until now.

daaaaaaaaaamn.

NOW YOU CAN'T UNTHINK IT.

(Seriously, have you watched The Pervert's Guide to Cinema? I've never been so turned on in my life. Okay that's not actually true but still.)

This is amazing and you are amazing.

It fills me with a Terrible Urge to read up on Lacan and other such intellectual things that I have trouble understanding.

The vampire characters call this “the true death” - as opposed to le petit mort?

EEHEEHEEHEEE

You are right. Every part of the movies with Charlie in them is great, and possibly other parts of the movies as well (including but not limited to FACEPUNCH: yeah let's do this, pants mysteries, and Aro's bizarre toothy annunciation). Every time I hear someone else say these things, I want to invite them to come with me and some other friends to a hilarious showing of Breaking Dawn. Which is to say, any showing of Breaking Dawn at all. I can't wait.

zizek says it's classist to think that only the intellectual academic types can understand lacan and everyone should have a go but the truth is no one understands lacan. every "lacanian" i read seemed to have a different idea of what was going on and then i realised: lacan is like lady gaga. he means whatever you want, or more accurately whatever you need him to mean.

sort of can't wait for breaking dawn either. it's going to be loltastic.
