So, The Green Hornet. STILL NOT SURE IF IT WAS GOOD.
It had moments of metacommentary, a sort of really gentle deconstruction of the superhero genre and also Cameron Diaz being a BAMF. It was fucking funny.
But. It was just sort of inconsistent? Like it was trying to be a Gondry film and a three act blockbuster at the same time and it didn't quite gel.
It's got great dialogue and characters and visually, I can only call it hilarious. Four out of five.
Also, Hawaii Five-O is my new guilty pleasure show because even though the plots are utterly execrable, a cut copy of tired clichés and unreasonable coincidences, the team is brilliant. Grace Park is sexy and crazy, Daniel Dae Kim is both charming and kind of scary in his calmness, and I could watch the Steve&Danno Flirt Shamelessly Variety Hour for at least six hours.
It's sort of Due South in reverse, I realised. Instead of SuperCop from WackyPlace moves to RegularPlace to work with LoudmouthCop to solve death of EmotionallyDistantSuperCopDad, LoudmouthCop has moved to WackyPlace to team up with SuperCop, who is solving the death of his EmotionallyDistantSuperCopDad.
McGarret is most definitely the mirrorFraser: kills people all the time* and regularly ignores due process, drives like a lunatic and has sex without epic piles of angst, but speaks Cantonese like a pro, knows crime solving factoids about mineral salts and cultural heritage and has a flashlight attached to his gun like a Boy Scout. Also, he has an ankle knife. If there is a storyline about a blind shark that once saved his life, I might actually explode from joy.
SOMEONE MUST HAVE DUE SOUTH/HAWAII FIVE-O FIC.
Also, Southland. Goddamn, all other shows pale in comparison and you need to watch it now, that is all.
(Hawaii Five-O does have a better themetune.)
*the show takes place in that curious universe where neither paperwork or PTSD exist
