The commercials make some people laugh, but must people, like I, think they are plain stupid ( Read more... )

You'll be interested in knowing that the initial response to the PC actor (John Hodgeman) was so good that Apple had to fire the original mac guy and retool the ads.

People were going "Wow, that PC guy is hilarious! I wish my PC acted like that."

I'd love it if the mud-flinging stopped (although as a Mac/Windows/Linux user I personally find the ads decently accurate, if tongue-in-cheek. The one ad about Macs being immune to viruses pissed me off, because it is blatantly untrue the way they presented it.)
I'd like to see any company out there produce an informative ad, though. There are no maxim ladies in my beer. Five Alive does not make me want to dance (please Five Alive, make me want to dance.) Hamburgers do not make me happy.

The type of ads you seek are definitely few and far between. Even ads that attempt to be educational have their own personal or political slant on it, making the message skewed somewhat.

Actually, I wrote this when you were considering buying a Mac, and forgot to post the entry. I thought about how seldom it is someone changing one way or another. And that thought brought me to those stupid commercials, which I totally dislike, and couldn't care less what others think about it.

And I never said high-end users use Windows. In fact, I know this from experience, the real high-end users use Linux as their operating system. I will only use Windows because I'm too dumb to use Linux, and I would never use the Mac if I had a choice.

If anything, the drunken hick Sundridge comment the other day was the only burn I made towards you, and the only reason for that was that I wanted to use Bonfield as the other town, but nobody from Bonfield reads my LJ.

The commercials are all about brand-building and consumer awareness. They need to be memorable more so than accurate or funny (although the intention is humorous, and at least some people find them funny to an extent). The fact that there's consistency among the adds and there are now like 5,000 of them means that the Mac brand will at least be in people's heads when they think of a computer, increasing the likelihood someone will buy one.
