I think in art...by deciding that you want to learn rules, techniques and styles...EVEN if you are doing this so you can break them, you are instantly deciding that there is a RIGHT way to do a technique and style. As long as you believe in the first place that there is a rule, you will never be able to break it. How can there be a RIGHT style, ( Read more... )

hmm...interesting point - personally i believe that learning things like how to draw a figure in proportion, where the muscles go, how to draw perspective, and basic old-style compositional rules (like the rule of thirds) give me a good basis from which to jump off into my own style ( ... )

yeah, like I said before, I see where you are coming from in that way, everyone does things in different ways! Plus I'm learning rules about proportions and perspectives because they are particular things I'm not good at. But my housemates talk about it like its the be all end all and even after practice and learning you have to use rules in order to make good art. I think that once you've learned the basics, you can then break free and apply what you learn to your own style rather then totally copying what other people have done, thats basically what my housemates are doing- they have no confidence in their own art, and so are just copying other techniques hoping it will make them amazing!
