So, there is a Sherlock Holmes movie coming out next year, staring Jude Law as Watson and Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes.  While surfting the web today and not working on my novel, I encountered the expected hostility towards anything that you get from the thing's fandom.  In this case, though, the complaints struck me as unusually bizarre, given the

Re #2 - main complaint hasnt been about his acting, the fanboys are bitching about his "inability" to do an English accent. Which he has in fact done successfully many times. He's a versatile actor, I don't see an issue in casting here

Re #3 - I don't know the description of Watson, my dad has the first volume of my SH stories so I havent started them yet, but Jude Law just strikes me as too much of an ugly pretty boy for the part. I agree that he has a nice voice. Id rather hear his voice than see much of him onscreen. I do think that he'd play well of RDJ. However, I am just NOT a Law fan, so I admit I'm unfairly biased

Ooh, you should totally read some of them - they're really good stories.

Chronologically, Watson starts off as a skinny, sickly soldier who gradually becomes stockier and 'thicker' due to good English eating. While not the most insightful character, he is an intelligent man - someone with Jude Law's personality and Vinnie Jones' body type would be perfection, I think, but given the choice between a physical match and a character one I'm glad they went with Law.
