And yet, if you try to write crazy things like the vampire squid, people will dismiss it as too out there.

Deep-sea creatures in particular are really bizarre. There's an episode of Blue Planet all about deep-sea denizens that just seems like you're watching footage of an alien planet.

One of my favourite sci-fi movies is the director's cut of The Abyss, which really carries this message that undersea can be just as isolating and just as filled with weird stuff as outer space (granted, it also has space aliens underwater, but that's not the point).
