"I'm not accustomed to thinking directly about my spirituality, especially since I've ceased to live with Sara (who talks about hers whenever given half a chance)."

I normally talk about my spiritiality when the subject comes up, as in this series of comments. Etc. As I am mommy to Sara and James, apparently some of it has rubbed off. Good to know.

I like the comparison of Jews and Elves.
And yes it's funny cause it's true. One of the (many) things I enjoy about her.

I'm not sure nominally is the word I'ld use, but I did try to balance the over Greekness of it all.

Thank you. :-)

Maybe you can figure it out (nobody else has) - who is Gandalf, then?

I've been thinking about this for a while, on and off. Gandalf is the father figure we all wish we had, a sort of guide into adulthood. He manages to give you the help you need without keeping you from doing yourself what you must do yourself...
but that doesn't seem like enough of an answer, somehow.

I was thinking more specifically in terms of a connection to Jewish mythology/folklore. Consider... if the elves are Jewish, then their mythology is Jewish mythology. What is an appropriate occasion for the hymn A Elbereth Gilthoniel? And who/what sort of figure is Aragorn?
