I just arrived here, so I don't really understand much of what is going on. But isn't right for people to try and protect themselves, if these things are trying to hurt us?

Regardless of why they're here, they're attacking us and the people still alive. Unless you intend for us to let them and ourselves die, the natural answer is self-defense.
