10.
"What do you think?" Yasu asks, the sound of his last chord still resonating in the air. Subaru doesn't answer, can't answer, because he's forgotten to listen.
"It was good," Subaru says. It isn't a lie because it probably was, it was just hard to notice, when all he could see was Yasu's hair in his face, sweat sliding down his neck, his fingers curving onto the neck of the guitar. When did things start to feel this way?
Yasu looks at him, a bit exasperated. Subaru is bad at lying.
"What do you really think?" Yasu says. "If you didn't like it, you can tell me."
Subaru speaks - his words around him like a protective shell. "I loved it," he says.
9.
Subaru enjoys being a pervert, which is fortunate for him because his employers seem to encourage it. It's always nice to get paid for something you do on your own time, after all.
He does it with everyone at one time or another, but with Yasu, it's comfortable enough that they can push each other as far as they want. Maybe it's trust. Maybe it's for show and maybe it's just what they do, but his hands move so naturally on Yasu's body and Yasu's hands so naturally on his that it adds a bit of excitement. Subaru thinks that maybe he can take it further with Yasu than he can with anyone else, so he pushes a little more, every time, and Yasu always responds.
It's playful and it's funny and it makes Yasu laugh, but Subaru always thinks there's something very unintentionally sexy about it at the time. Then pushes the thought out of his mind right after.
8.
It only takes one moment for everything to change.
Yasu kisses Subaru by accident after a concert when the drinks are running over the rims of their glasses. Everyone is speaking at once, laughing and goofing off and drunk and Yasu leans in for a pretend kiss, then forgets about the pretend part of it.
He's surprised by just how enthusiastically Subaru kisses him back.
But he shouldn't be surprised, he thinks later, because there is a joke to watch your lips when Subaru starts drinking ("May want to watch some other parts, too," Subaru says in response), but this is the first time Yasu initiated it.
Yasu laughs it off at first, then feels horribly embarrassed for a while, then prepares himself for what will probably be a solid week of teasing.
7.
"That was funny," Yoko says, toweling his hair and looking at Subaru's reflection in the mirror next to him.
"What was?"
"Yasu kissing you."
Subaru rolls his eyes. It was nothing, really. Nothing different from their usual outings following a particularly good show. But Yoko keeps grinning in a really aggravating way.
"You're in love with him," Yoko says.
Subaru stops in the middle of pulling on his shirt.
"You're an idiot," Subaru says.
"Or a genius," Yoko says.
6.
Subaru stands near the exit of the studio long after everyone has already left. Why he keeps thinking about that stupid kiss with Yasu, he really has no idea. But he put on a good show for Yasu, didn't he? Everyone was yelling and calling attention to them, and so Subaru kissed him back in a way that let him know that he wasn't going to disappoint.
Did Yasu's hand slip onto his back, too? Subaru tries to remember. Maybe it's something his imagination is inserting into the picture or maybe he's thinking about it way too long…
"Shibuyan?"
Subaru nearly jumps.
But it isn't just Yasu when he turns around. He's with Maru and Ohkura and they all look ready to leave, with their bags on their shoulders and coats on.
Subaru looks at Yasu for as long as possible before Ohkura starts whining.
"Ask him already," Ohkura says.
"As me what?" Subaru says. The words come out so quickly, he nearly trips over them.
"Do you want to ride back home with us?" Yasu says. The question hangs awkwardly in the air for a moment before Subaru shrugs sheepishly.
5.
Ryo is harmless.
Unless he's decided to be not harmless. Subaru stands next to him in an elevator. The silence is thick.
Then Ryo breaks it.
"So," he says. "You and Yasu?"
It seems like a word is forming on Subaru's lips, but it never makes its way out.
"Really?" Ryo grins widely.
Subaru watches the lights indicating the floors. 5…6…7
"I don't get why everyone is making a big deal out of that," Subaru snaps.
"I think it's nice..." Ryo says.
8…9 The elevator stops.
"Hm," Subaru says, slipping through the half open doors. "I wonder where Ohkura got that huge hickey on his neck."
Ryo runs right into the door.
4.
"I shouldn't have done it," Yasu says.
Uchi sounds so distant on the phone. "Why not?" he asks.
"Because everything is all weird now!" Yasu says. "He's hardly talking to me. We used to do things together and now… well…"
"Did you want to do it?" Uchi asks.
"I don't know, I was… drinking and we were all being silly and…"
"Did you?"
"No," Yasu says. Then, "I don't know."
"If there's something you want to do," Uchi says. "Just do it."
3.
Okinawa is more beautiful than Yasu even remembered, and he doesn't want to feel anything but the sun on his back the entire time they are there. He wants to swim in the water and he wants to feel the sand between his toes and when it's time to perform, he gives it everything he has. Something about the island resonates with him, and makes his whole body feel alive.
He stands out on the shore, right before the water reaches and turns the sand a dark shade of brown, not knowing how he managed to get this stretch of land all to himself. The beach is empty on either side of him.
There is music in the water somewhere, he thinks, but he won't ever say that out loud because he'd definitely get teased.
Footsteps come up behind him in the sand and the spell is broken.
"Hey," Subaru says.
2.
In just two days, Subaru and Yasu are both so tanned that their skin starts to peel. Subaru whines about it, but Yasu doesn't care too much. It doesn't stop either of them from going out to the beach again and just walking along the sand. They've been together for two whole days, but Yasu doesn't think they've spoken more than a few necessary words.
"Oh, hey, you live," Hina chides in the hallway of the hotel room. But it's fair ; they've hardly seen anyone else in days. Then Hina makes the suggestion of using aloe and, helpfully, has a bottle in his room.
It starts with Subaru unable to reach, then Yasu is kneading the lotion into Subaru's back. Subaru does the same for Yasu, but his hands move curiously to Yasu's chest, his arms wind around and he gets so close that his head is resting against Yasu's back.
Yasu's body feels stiff and frozen. The whole room feels icy cold. Subaru starts to pull away when Yasu speaks.
"I'm sorry," Yasu says.
Subaru doesn't want to ask for what, doesn't need to know. He just turns Yasu's shoulders and Yasu complies until they're facing each other.
Yasu blinks twice and Subaru's lips are against his.
1.
"What do you think?" Yasu asks. For some reason the sound of his guitar seems tinny against the walls of the hotel room.
Subaru sits next to Yasu on the bed, his arm resting on Yasu's bare thigh.
"Play it again."
