Ryo sits across from Ohkura at a tiny table in a tiny cafe.
"I broke up with her," Ryo says.
Ohkura, not wanting to ever have to talk to anyone about things like this, says "Mm".
"She was really just... it wasn't working out," Ryo goes on. "Never had enough time for me, always put me off, you know, I can't be with someone like that..."
"Mm," Ohkura says, half into his coffee cup.
"So that's it," Ryo says.
"Okay."
"That's... it."
"Mm."
---
Uchi doesn't even pretend to not be drunk when he calls Ohkura.
"Hey," Uchi breathes into the line. "Do you want to come over?"
Ohkura hesitates.
"No, really, do you want to come over and play video games or something? I'm so bored."
When Ohkura arrives, Uchi is lying down on the couch in a fuzzy baby blue bathrobe. He's got a glass of wine in one hand and the TV remote in the other, just flipping aimlessly. He leaves the door cracked so that Ohkura can come inside.
"Red or white?" Uchi asks. "Or maybe you like sparkling."
"I like red," Ohkura says. Uchi pours him a glass.
"So, speaking of red..." Uchi says. "Have you talked to Ryo today?"
Ohkura blinks a little. "Yeah, why?"
"Just wondering..." Uchi says.
They have a couple of glasses, and Uchi never takes out his PSP (Ohkura's sits lonely and cold in his pocket). Ohkura starts to feel more relaxed after the second glass, then downright woozy after the third.
"Did you know Ryo had a girlfriend?" Ohkura blurts out.
Uchi looks at him, wide-eyed. "...No," he says. "Does he?"
"He did, anyway," Ohkura says. "He said he broke up with her, but..."
"Broke up with her?" Uchi asks.
"I don't know, he said something about putting him off."
"Putting him off?! And I think she broke up with him!"
Ohkura lifts an eyebrow.
"Do you want another glass?" Uchi says, sweetly. Ohkura looks at him a little skeptical, but agrees.
Uchi pours the wine until it's at the rim of the glass. "I have a phone call to make. I'll be right back."
---
Uchi sits across from Ohkura at a tiny table in a tiny cafe.
"Can you do me a favor?" he asks.
Ohkura shrugs. "What is it?"
"I have a few CD's of Ryo's... can you give them to him for me?"
"I guess so," Ohkura says. "I won't see him until next week."
"Doesn't matter," Uchi says. Then he produces a box.
There aren't only CD's, there are also a couple of comic books, a T-shirt, a pair of shoes and-- Ohkura stops nosing around about halfway through the box.
"It's just cluttering up my apartment," Uchi says. "And he probably won't have time to come by and get them anyway..."
Ohkura takes the box and starts to pull out his wallet.
"I've got it," Uchi says.
---
Ohkura sits across from Ryo at a tiny table in a tiny cafe.
He doesn't say a word about his ex-girlfriend and Ohkura's glad for it. Sure, he's Ryo's friend, but he tends to think of that kind of thing as personal. He doesn't talk about his girlfriends with Ryo, after all, and he's no worse off for it.
"Are you going to see Uchi soon?" Ryo asks.
"Probably, why?"
"He left some DVD's over at my house, could you give them to him?"
"I... guess so?" Ohkura says. He doesn't know exactly when he became an errand boy, and he's not entirely sure he likes it.
"They're out in my car," Ryo says.
Once outside, Ryo opens up the trunk to reveal a box full of, not only DVD's, but a couple of random articles of clothing, just like the box Uchi gave to Ohkura the day before. That Ohkura had completely forgotten.
"Let's stop at my place," Ohkura says. "I have something to give to you."
Ryo's phone rings while he's driving, and he probably shouldn't pick it up, but he does so without looking, and wishes he hadn't when he hears the voice on the other end.
"Hi, Ryo-chan," Uchi says. "It's Hiroko, or whatever you're calling me."
Ryo sighs. "What do you want?"
"My DVD's," Uchi says.
"Are you watching me or something?! I'm on my way to--"
"You better not be coming here," Uchi says.
"Why not?"
Uchi pauses.
"Because one of your bandmates is here and I'm about to give him the best blowjob he's ever had in his life, okay?"
"I'm sure," Ryo says. "Which one?"
"Tadayoshi," Uchi purrs.
Ryo looks in his rearview. Ohkura's still right behind him where he's been the whole time.
"Oh, yeah?" Ryo says. "Hey, I've got to ask him something, can you put him on?"
"His mouth is a little occupied right now," Uchi says.
"I thought you were giving him a blowjob," Ryo says.
"Well he decided to reciprocate."
"Ah. Preemptive reciprocation."
Uchi struggles with a couple of words, but none really come all the way out.
"And I know you're lying because your voice sounds different when you're getting head."
"It does?"
"It's deeper," Ryo says, clearing his throat, speaking before thinking. "And softer."
It's almost like he can feel Uchi's fingers in his hair, like he can taste and smell him, and the sensations rush back to Ryo so quickly he takes the wrong exit and watches Ohkura speed by.
"Ohkura's on the way with the DVD's," Ryo says, and they both hang up without saying goodbye.
---
Ryo sits alone at a tiny table in a tiny cafe.
Uchi comes in the door and they meet eyes just for a moment before Uchi turns around and leaves.
---
It doesn't take a genius to figure out what's going on, but unfortunately for Ohkura, it does take someone who is paying attention.
Ohkura notices what is happening only when it starts to impede on his personal living space. First there are some of Uchi's things in his apartment. They start off in the doorway, then make their way to the main living space, where they're just in the way of Ohkura stretching out his legs to watch TV. Then, the phone calls. Day and night, it seems. Then Uchi himself, sitting on the opposite end of the couch. Ohkura's almost not even sure how he got there.
"What?" Uchi asks. "Why are you staring at me?"
Ohkura groans. "How long are you going to stay?"
"That's no way to talk to a friend!"
"You've been here for days," Ohkura says.
"Did I overstay my welcome?" Uchi asks, looking genuinely pathetic. A look that would probably work on anyone but Ohkura.
"I just want to watch TV," Ohkura whines.
"I'm not stopping you," Uchi says, curling his legs up on the couch. Ohkura sighs.
He puts on a Grey's Anatomy DVD and they watch from either end of the couch. Somehow a box of tissue ends up between them, but they don't talk about it much. They watch two episodes, then Ohkura gets himself a beer and Uchi follows suit.
"I know I've been asking a lot of you, lately..." Uchi says, loudly and drowning out Dr. McDreamy, to Ohkura's dismay.
"Yeah?" Ohkura says, resigned.
"Do you think you could, um..." Uchi pokes at the carpet with his toe.
"What?" Ohkura says, impatiently, because now he's drowning out Meredith.
"Do you think you could ask if he has the hair dryer I left at his place...?"
"You can have my hair dryer," Ohkura moans. "Seriously what is going on... with..."
He looks at Uchi, at his pitiful expression, a heartbeat turns into a flatline in the background.
"...you two."
Ohkura's rather quick once he finally does start paying attention.
---
Ryo calls Ohkura early in the morning.
"So you dropped that stuff off, right?"
Ohkura's groggy, but he mumbles out a "yeah".
He probably should have known about Ryo and Uchi, but he's not one to meddle in business that isn't his. At the same time, he's in a group with one well known meddler, so he's surprised Yoko didn't find out and make it everyone's business.
Maybe he did know and didn't say anything for a reason. It all starts to come together in Ohkura's mind - the snapping and the boxes and the phone calls. He thinks about Uchi, still asleep on his couch, and he makes sure the door is close enough to being closed before he speaks.
"I know about you and--"
"I have to go."
---
It doesn't happen often, but Ryo has one half of one blissful day off. The workaholic in him tries to make a list of things he could be doing, but, physically, he's too exhausted to do much else besides lie in his bed and blast music on his headphones.
If Uchi was still around, he wouldn't be having this relaxing evening, because Uchi would be over there, probably drawing a bath right about now, probably talking on the phone or texting or telling Ryo about this stupid joke he got in his email that morning. If he takes off the headphones, it'll just be peaceful quiet. He slips them down off of his ears, just to prove it to himself, and he's right.
He doesn't miss Uchi. He misses some idea that there was someone to come home to (even though Ryo's hardly ever home). He misses the idea of not feeling so lonely sometimes. But, it doesn't have to be Uchi specifically, does it? Uchi, who really does put him off sometimes...
He finds himself thinking about Uchi's shampoo, how it's so damn easy to convince his friends that it's a "girlfriend" just by the way the bathroom smells. The way Uchi laughs when he's happy and laughs when he's nervous. His fingertips that feel so familiar. The way that Uchi's grown from a boy into a man and how his eyes have always looked exactly the same.
Ryo turns the volume up on his headphones. Then, when that doesn't work he draws a bath.
---
Ohkura sits across from Uchi at a tiny table in a tiny cafe.
"Well, I gotta run!" Uchi says, when Ryo walks in the door. "Now! Bye! See you!"
He accidentally makes a huge show of it when he nearly trips over someone's chair, bumps against a man's back and makes him spill coffee down the front of his shirt. He scrambles to get himself together, but it's too late for dignity.
"What the--" Ryo says.
"WAIT," Ohkura yells. His voice is deep and booming and normally reserved only for when someone has committed the worst atrocities against a delicious piece of meat. Uchi stops in his tracks, then everyone in the cafe is staring.
"Come back," Ohkura says to Uchi. "Sit down," he says to Ryo.
He's horribly embarrassed that everyone is looking at him and Ryo and Uchi both sit down sheepishly, so as not to cause any more commotion. Ohkura looks at both of them sternly.
They both watch him expectantly, and Ohkura suddenly feels like he's expected to give some kind of a speech. That's not what he's here to do, and not even what he probably could do even if he wanted to.
He points at Ryo. "You told me he was putting you off," Ohkura says.
"I don't put you off!" Uchi shouts.
"You do! You always act like--"
"It's not my fault you're such a workaholic and never have time for anyo--"
"Me?! What about yo--"
No one notices Ohkura quietly slipping out the door.
---
Uchi brings the box of things that Ryo had Ohkura return to him. He puts it down on Ryo's kitchen table and it lands with a thump.
"You could bring it back in increments..." Ryo says.
"I was thinking I could just dump it all out on the floor." Uchi shrugs.
Ryo stares.
"Maybe spread it out a little..."
Despite himself, Ryo tries not to smile.
"Aren't we supposed to be having make-up sex right about now?" Uchi asks.
Uchi's fingertips are just as familiar, his shampoo smells exactly the same, but somehow Ryo likes the sound of Uchi's laugh better when it's against his lips.
