"You have a boyfriend!" Hina laughs.
"I do not!"
"It's okay. I won't tell anyone."
"I wouldn't expect anyone to understand your gorilla language anyway..." Yoko says.
Hina slaps Yoko on the back and Yoko scowls.
"So, how long has Maru been living here?"
"He isn't living here."
The aromatherapy candles beg to differ. So do the books about ancient religion and the occult among the piles of video games.
"You know, I could say the same for you! How else would you know he's been here? It's only because you spend so much time with him yourself."
Hina laughs, annoyingly.
"It's like I've got your sloppy seconds or something!"
"Ahh, so you do have a boyfriend!"
"I do not!"
The doorknob turns and Maru, with his own key, enters the room.
"Hey, guys," Maru says.
Yoko sighs.
---
Maru's story is that his apartment building is undergoing such loud renovations that he cannot sleep at night.
After the second night, he reserved a hotel room in Osaka, then never made it there at all. Instead, he canceled his reservation, brought his small suitcase to Yoko's place, and has been there ever since.
Yoko would say, this is not exactly how it happened.
Every day after work, Yoko leaves the company building by himself. Maru has invited him out a couple of times, but Yoko's always turned him down, figuring there isn't any reason they need to spend time together when they've just spent time together all day. And by now Maru should know that if he asks, he's just going to suffer rejection. He should know better! Yoko thinks. But, this time Maru is determined. And it's hard to stop a determined Maru when he's barreling right into you.
It's harder to say no when Maru is making a face like that and has tickets to a live that Yoko doesn't much mind seeing. He practically pushes Yoko onto the train, but Yoko doesn't do much in the way of protesting. Maru buys him a ticket, and they stand together on the crowded platform.
---
"I was going to come with an old friend from school," Maru shouts over the music. "But he canceled."
"Oh, so I'm a second choice then?" Yoko tries to sound hurt, but it's hard to do that while yelling.
"You can't say that after all the times you've rejected me!" Maru laughs. He's smiling as big as Yoko has ever seen him, and it's so contagious that Yoko feels his own face lighting up only belatedly.
He keeps smiling even when a conglomeration of teenage boys run into him shoving him and Maru even closer together. Even when the band has sound problems and that squeaky feedback fills the room. Even when they stumble outside, too disoriented to find the train station. And normally Yoko just wants to go home. Alone. But he doesn't stop Maru from following him.
These days, the way to Yoko's heart is a meal that is not bananas. Maru treats them both to yakiniku in a dimly lit restaurant. It's a little jarring for Yoko, but Maru seems to know everyone who works there. They're recognized by a couple of the customers ("Hey, isn't that that guy? From TV?"), but the staff treats Maru like they're old friends.
"They're friends of yours?" Yoko asks.
Maru shrugs. "I've just eaten here a few times. They're really nice, aren't they?"
Yoko wonders what it would be like if he could do that, too.
That's when Maru springs the news: he's homeless for three days. But he has a hotel room there in Osaka. From the noise of renovation to the noise of Osaka city.
Maybe it's the sake, or the headiness of the live they've just seen. Or maybe it's the fact that Maru won't stop smiling that stupid smile and making Yoko do the same. There is something at play here, but Yoko can't put it together.
"You can stay with me if you want," Yoko says. His mouth moving before his brain catches up.
"Really?" Maru asks.
Yoko noticed the bag over Maru's shoulder even before they left work, but he thought of it as a day bag, not all of his possessions for three whole nights.
"Don't you need clothes?" Yoko asks, frowning.
"I keep some at work."
"Ah," Yoko nods. It's not like he's never spent time with Maru in close proximity before, but he starts to feel awkward about the whole thing. Maru staying in his apartment. Going to work together in the morning. Leaving together at night. Will they have meals together? Will they need to coordinate time spent in the shower?
"Even if I run out of clothes, there are plenty of stage costumes I could use," Maru waggles his eyebrows.
Yoko laughs at the idea of Maru riding the train in glitter and sequins. Then doesn't doubt for a moment that he'd do it.
---
The tricky part of the evening is when they get off at the train station near Yoko's apartment. Maru sees someone across the sidewalk and begins to flag her down.
"Hey, isn't that Ayaka-san?" Maru says.
"What?"
"Ayaka-san! She works on the set of your drama, right? I met her when I went to visit! She's the one who..."
"She sets up the lunches," Yoko says, a slow realization dawns on him.
"Ayaka-san!" Maru says, waving. She finally sees them, a bright smile on her face, and veers from her original direction to come and talk to them.
As she approaches, Yoko becomes more and more interested in looking at the sidewalk. He studies the toes of all of their shoes, tries to decipher their voices from the loud traffic on the street next to them. Maru carries most of the conversation, but Ayaka is cute, so Maru naturally gets bashful after talking to her for too long. He starts to stumble over his words, giggling while he speaks, and it all gets a little too awkward for Yoko. He grabs Maru by the elbow, says a sweet "goodbye" to Ayaka (which may or may not have been as sweet as he intended it, the looks she gives him is a little skeptical), but he's just relieved to be walking in the other direction, heading home.
Maru, mercifully, doesn't say anything about it.
That night, Maru sleeps on a futon rolled out on the floor of the main room. Yoko takes his gameboy into his bedroom, but plays it muted. He falls asleep to the sound of Maru breathing, and the sound of the wind blowing through the open windows.
---
The second live.
"Where do you get tickets to all of these shows??" Yoko asks, incredulously. As if it's that hard to get tickets to a couple of shows.
"If I'm staying in Osaka a few days, I may as well," Maru says.
"...You're always here!" Yoko raises an eyebrow, not knowing why he's decided to pry into Maru's personal life all of a sudden. He's known Maru a long time, but hasn't really known Maru a long time. They've gone on trips together, but they didn't sit up all night trading life stories. Maru's someone who is so easy for Yoko to be around, that he doesn't really think twice about what their friendship might be lacking. But spending just a few days where he's constantly with Maru, Yoko feels like maybe he doesn't know Maru that well at all.
"But it feels like I'm living here now, doesn't it?" Maru smiles.
"No it doesn't! You're just staying..."
The line moves, then, and they're herded into the concert hall. Yoko stays close to Maru the whole time, but they're separated by the crowd, so he holds onto Maru's wrist all the way inside.
The singer has dyed blond hair and is shapely, wearing something so skin tight that Yoko can see every curve of her body while she slinks around the stage. He thinks of cracking a joke as to that's why Maru likes this band so much. But he forgets to make a comment while he's watching her, swaying with the rest of the crowd, maybe even liking the music enough to ask Maru about it after the show.
The hall is dark, but the lights from the stage are blinding. Yoko doesn't think he's ever seen Maru quite so excited. He's singing along with the music, beaming at the stage. It gives him a warm feeling, seeing Maru so excited like this. Away from pressures and in a place where he really wants to be with all of his heart.
While they're leaving the venue, Maru waves to a couple of guys. They're people his Dad used to work with, and he smiles at them in the most familiar way even though he hasn't seen them in years. Then Maru sees a couple leaving, hand in hand, and stops to say hello. They're the parents of one of his little sister's classmates. He's only met them once before.
When they get back to Yoko's apartment, Maru kisses him. Maybe out of excitement, maybe he's too hyper, maybe there is just way too much adrenaline left over from the concert. Whatever the reason, Yoko doesn't stop him. Maybe he even likes it, he doesn't know. It's not a kiss kiss. It's just their lips pressed together, with Maru's arms around him and Maru pats Yoko on the back a little before they separate.
"Then I bid you goodnight," Maru says, bowing a little and giving a silly grin. It makes Yoko chuckle a little, but he tries not to sound as nervy as he feels.
He lies in bed, touches his lips with his thumb. Maybe he wanted there to be more to it. Maybe Maru will do it again. They'll come back from work the next day and this time Yoko won't be taken aback. This time he'll be ready for it.
But the next day passes, and it never happens.
---
"So what does it mean if someone kisses you... and then they don't do it again?"
Yasu shrugs. "I don't know. Was it a good kiss?"
Yoko, too afraid to answer with words, nods slowly.
"Why do you think I'd know the answer to that anyway?" Yasu laughs.
"Well, you're kind of an expert on the subject, aren't you?"
"The subject of kissing?"
"The subject of kissing guys!" Yoko says the last part in a whisper. Then cringes.
Yasu's eyes grow wide. "I think it's time to go!"
"No no!" Yoko holds Yasu by the shoulders. "It isn't! Just... help me? Please?"
Yasu, normally happy to help anyone with anything, can't do anything but stare up at Yoko, frozen.
"Come on!" Yoko whines.
"What... do you need?"
"Advice."
"On what?" Yasu struggles.
Yoko holds him tight. "I think I might like him!"
Then he lets go of Yasu, just staring at him, horrified. He's having a lot of trouble with his mouth moving before he thinks this week. Not that no one has ever said this about him before, but it usually doesn't affect him in a negative way. And having Yasu look at him like he's entirely pitiful is not helping matters at all.
"Why don't you tell him?" Yasu offers.
"I can't do that!"
"Why not?"
"I just can't," Yoko says. He sighs, crosses his arms, looks down at the floor, all at the same time.
Yasu touches Yoko's back, reassuringly.
"So what do you do? When you have to tell a guy you li--"
"...It really is time to go."
---
The third and last night that Maru sleeps on the floor of Yoko's apartment is in the middle of the week. Maru has plans to go back home the next day, and it seems a little inconvenient to go back to Kyoto during the week when they still have work in Osaka until Friday. Before he can start overthinking it, Yoko decides to stop thinking about it at all.
"Hey, can I ask you something?" Maru says. He's lying on the floor, on his side. There is a movie playing on the TV, and it's nearly at a climactic point, but obviously Maru wasn't paying much attention if he can just talk over it like that. When he turns over, Yoko sees a book in his hands. Yoko supposes this isn't really Maru's type of movie anyway. It's all car chases and action.
"Yeah, what?"
"Would it be okay if I stayed another night? We have to be at work early Friday morning, so..."
"Sure," Yoko says, nonchalantly. Something tightens in his chest.
This is stupid. The stupidest thing he's ever thought about, or felt. It's not like this is a real feeling, because if he really felt this way about Maru, he would have felt this way about him before. He's known him for years, spent more time with him and the rest of the group than he has with most of his family members. Why all of a sudden? This kind of thing doesn't just happen. Does it?
Maru goes to the bathroom and brushes his teeth, and Yoko pretends like he's watching the movie. Some cars explode, and some American actor holds up a gun at another one. They're standing on the edge of a cliff. The gun goes off.
"Good night, Yuu-chin~" Maru says cutely, when he comes back from the bathroom. He kneels by the chair Yoko is in, but before he lies back, Yoko reaches out for one of his shoulders. He holds him, then, in the most awkward move imaginable, Yoko leans in and kisses him. It's like the first one, only Yoko's more confident this time. And he's unsure whether he's kissing Maru because he really wants to, or if he just needs to prove to himself that he can. Either way, he stops thinking, and just closes his eyes.
It's a nice kiss, and intense kiss, and the small noise that escapes from Maru's mouth excites Yoko much more than he's willing to admit. Then, as soon as it starts to reach a place where it needs to either go further or stop entirely... it stops.
Maru licks his lips and blinks a couple of times, a light shade of red on his cheeks.
"Good night," Yoko says, biting his lip to stop himself from smiling.
---
Maru leaves early in the morning for breakfast, but he leaves a note saying that he'll bring something back for Yoko, too. Yoko eyes the note groggily, standing in the kitchen in his boxer shorts. It's better that Maru isn't here because then he'd have to talk to him and then that thing that he accidentally said to Yasu might come out. And it's bad that Maru will be here another night. But maybe Yoko can make some kind of excuse. Maybe he can get out of it somehow.
Since he's working on location, somewhere remote, management is sending a car for him this morning. He doesn't have to get ready and run to catch the train, just has to sit back and wait to be picked up. Maru is filming somewhere in town, so he will have to catch the train. He's cutting it close already, from what he told Yoko about his schedule. Yoko takes a long shower. If he's lucky, he can time it so he's ready right when the car comes to pick him up. Cutting it close, too. Maybe for the same reason.
He combs his hair, then puts on a hat. Tries on three different pairs of sunglasses. Then there is a knock at the door.
"They sent you to pick me up?"
"What do you expect, the chauffer from your limo?" Hina says. "Come on, the driver can't stay parked out there all morning!"
"I suppose not..." Yoko mumbles, pulling a bag over his shoulder.
Hina looks around the room.
"What?" Yoko asks, defensively.
"You have a boyfriend!" Hina laughs.
"I do not!"
