World Still Moving. :D
Nino wakes up to the sound of rain against the window. It might be night or it might be morning, it’s winter and the clouds have made day and night blend into the same shade of grey for days now. It takes Nino a moment to remember where he is. Then he opens his eyes to see Ohno sleeping in the bed next to his.
That’s how people sleep in hotel rooms, generally. They don’t share beds, unless they’re a couple. Which Ohno and Nino are definitely not. Nino’s back lifts off of the mattress as a chill runs through the length of his body. He’s cold. Ohno is snoring.
Nino is awake. Annoyingly awake and it’s probably too early to be up, but Nino doesn’t look at the clock. If he doesn’t look at the clock, then it’s not like it’s really a new day. And if it isn’t morning and isn’t really a new day, then maybe it wouldn’t count if he slipped into Ohno’s bed and curled up next to him. It would be warmer that way, he thinks, then pulls the blanket up and over his head.
This is stupid. But it happens about three times out of five, when he and Ohno are sharing a hotel room. Nino lies in bed and he thinks about just doing it already. Just this once. He might as well do it just to know for sure. What could happen? Ohno might like it, or he might go along with it.
Or he might say no, he might say it’s weird and he doesn’t want it and that makes Nino’s back lift from the mattress for a different sort of reason. Something turning in his stomach. One of these times just soothing himself back to sleep isn’t going to stop the turning anymore.
Three times out of five, and the chances are he’ll be lying in his bed thinking about all of this again. This is stupid.
Ohno stops snoring.
“Ohno?” Nino says. Then Ohno starts snoring again.
It’s cold when Nino pushes the blanket off. The carpet of the hotel room floor is even colder on the bottoms of his feet, and even Ohno’s blankets are cold when Nino slips under them. The unused side of the bed is hard and uninviting, but he moves closer to Ohno where it’s warmer and the mattress is worked in a little more.
This is stupid. This is stupid. This is stu--
“You’re in my bed,” Ohno says.
“Yeah, well,” Nino mutters. “It’s cold.”
Next time, Nino thinks, he’s sharing a room with Aiba. Because Aiba will let him get into his bed without waking up and making things even weirder than they were already. Or with Jun, so Nino won’t even be tempted to get into the same bed in the first place. Or Sho, who Nino will just shove and tell him to move over and steal all of his blankets... Yeah, Sho is probably the right choice.
“You can do it if you want,” Ohno says.
Nino feels his breath catch, not sure how to know what Ohno thinks that means. “What?”
“I don’t know,” Ohno says.
Nino pushes his head back into the pillow and groans. This is what he hates the most about Ohno. The way he just goes with the flow no matter how little sense it makes. The way he’s so damn flippant about things like people getting into bed with him at odd hours of the night. Or morning. Or whatever the hell it is. “Why are you like that?”
“I don’t know,” Ohno says.
“Well stop it,” Nino says.
“Okay.”
Nino pushes the covers off, sits up and dangles one leg off of the side of the bed.
“Just saying,” Ohno says. “You can if you want to.”
“Are you asleep?” Nino asks. He turns around, and this is when he really sees Ohno. The light is too soft to make out all of his features, but that’s his face. Looking the same as he does awake as he does asleep. One arm is bent at the elbow over his head. Nino’s mostly asking a serious question.
“Maybe,” Ohno says.
“Will you remember this in the morning?” Nino asks. Leaving aside that it is morning. Or might be.
Then he doesn’t give Ohno a chance to answer. Just leans in close, takes a deep breath and kisses him. On the lips. Nothing more than that and it’s over after a moment. But even just that makes Nino feel heavy inside. The moment between the kiss and Ohno’s reaction stretches out so much longer than it should...
The alarm goes off, slicing right through the moment and Nino nearly breaks it when he turns it off.
Ohno opens one eye. Then the other. Then gives Nino a look that is just entirely too smug.
“Good morni--” Nino smacks him.
“Seriously,” Nino says. “Why are you like that?”
Ohno blinks. “Is it morning?”
Nino doesn’t look at the clock. “No,” he says.
“Are you asleep?” Ohno asks.
“Probably,” Nino says.
There are only a few inches of space between them and Ohno closes it swiftly with a kiss that’s a little more than the last one, but a little less than Nino wants it to be. But enough for now, Nino thinks, as the thoughts running circles in his mind finally relax and the room finally feels like it isn’t quite so cold.
