Just a little side-note, perhaps: I learnt some time ago that usually when you narrate a story and don't particularly want to convey a certain (?) atmosphere (which you didn't want to, I think), you are better off writing things out. As in: instead of "he's" you should write "he is". Negations can be shortened, but things like it's/he's/he'd/etc. should be written out-- or that's what I learnt. Since you shortened those all the time, I thought I'd point that out?

I might be completely wrong, though.
