But he never can find a parking space

Today I had planned to go to the OTLA family law section meeting. I arrived downtown on time, and spent about 15 minute circling the blocks looking for a place to park. No space in lots, no spaces on the street, anywhere. I finally gave up and went back to the office, rather than keep looking and eventually wander in half-way through ( Read more... )

Yeah, infrastructure here is shit. The city has not even tried keep pace with growth here in the last twenty to thirty years, and it is really starting to show in a variety of nasty ways. I'm not sure whether to be sorry or relieved that you don't know how things were back in the old days, before Mayor Sharky (Katz) and her intern-seducing protégé (Adams) wrecked up the place.

I'm sorry you missed your meeting, cutie, that sucks in a large way.

I have a hard time believing that I can blame political decisions for my trouble finding parking. Limited parking is a problem in every downtown I've ever been in. And I'd rather have that than, I don't know, garages everywhere. Missing the meeting is not a huge deal, it was just a bit embarrassing.

Oh, Jay, you can blame anything for anything! But infrastructure isn't just parking garages, you know, it covers a whole system that allows for an efficient use of the city by its residents. For many years, the city has been encouraging growth by giving huge tax breaks to developers and buyers of new properties, which is where the money for infrastructure improvements (necessary with new development) comes from. So the improvements have been deferred and deferred until at last it has become an enormous problem.

This may be a longstanding problem in places like Detroit, but it didn't used to be a problem here.
