Aliens, actually. They couldn't sustain their forms in Earth's atmosphere, so they used a gaseous medium, making them look like ghosts. Didn't really help that they possessed corpses to help them move, either. That was one of the first times I really thought I was going to die. But we wound up gettin' out in the end, just like always.
