The first toothpaste was invented by a New London, CT dentist Washington Wentworth Sheffield. In the mid-1800's, he developed a cleaning powder that was quite popular with his patients. However, his toothpaste did not catch on until it was packaged in tin tubes. Interestingly, Dr. Sheffield received 30 patents ranging from a way of capping teeth to elevated railroads. The Sheffield Tube Company still exists today.
