I guess it depends on how you interpret it? You should like an artist because you like their music, not because they are popular- kinda like jumping on the bandwagon for a winning sports team you've never followed before.

Exactly: you should like a musician because of their music and not because of their level of popularity. I really hate the game of, "oooh, how many obscure bands do you know?" and judging people based on the level of popularity of their favorite musicians.
