I always seem to - quite ignorantly - have this idea in my head that Australia and America are quite similar, culturally, aesthetically. But then I see pictures like this, and films set in the south or the mid-west, or I listen to Johnny Cash again and I'm jolted back to reality.

i understand what you mean. there's something incredibly american about these photos, but it's impossible to put my finger on exactly why. other places have suburban streets and rusty cars, you know? sometimes i think americana is just so intrinsic. i'm really an americanophile, though, so i like to see it in everything.

I know what you mean. It seems obvious but it's so hard to pin down, to define. I think Americana is so recognisable.

By the way, I know a while ago you asked for book recommendations. I recently finished reading Raymond Carver's 'What We Talk About When We Talk About Love', and while it's not exactly Americana, it is a really telling portrait of American life in the 1980s. I'm not sure whether you know the book or not (so please forgive me if I'm talking down to you!) but it's basically a series of short stories. They're not ~sold separately~; they form a cumulative whole that is so much greater than its parts and leaves a collective impression. If, of course, you've already read it, I'd love to know what you thought of it!

i haven't read that, no. it sounds great! i'll definitely give it a read, i was running out of literature and was resorting to shlocky, cheesy "I Am Number Four" (inspired partly by a dream i had in which i was getting married to alex pettyfer. i never have dreams about celebrities, so it sort of left an impression). ANYWAY, it'll be nice to read some real literature. thanks, doll!
