The thing is, it turns out to be so easy that I want to go back in time and teach my six year old self, haha. I mean, cutting out an owl shape is *not* so easy, but I think I'm happiest with the ones where I didn't try some crazy-fancy experiment, and those were quite simple

Oh my gosh, you are evidently my sister's Craft Twin! This is what she generally spends the entire month of December doing. Hers are the most delicate and intricate I've ever seen, but I don't think I've ever seen her attempt representation or particular artistic styles, so this is mad cool. Talented people!

LOL. I'm too embarrassed to describe it any more thoroughly than I already have, but I'm sure you've found the right one. (Or, at any rate, I don't want to find out you picked a different one, which would mean I made two creepy snowflakes!) Just... ew. There's a bizarre suggestion of fallopian tubes and whatnot going on there...
Oh, it's really not so hard! I was a total snowflake-dunce all my life until it finally clicked. And by 'clicked' I mean... I looked up tips on the internets. If you're interested, I wrote out what I learned in a comment above.
I wonder whether my students would find it a hy-uuuge distraction if I did the same... I mean, it's TWO WHOLE HOURS of undictated free time! For me. Heh.
