Character Information
General
Canon Source: Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
Canon Format: Video Game
Character's Name: Vanitas
Character's Age: Technically four, but Vanitas looks and acts as if he is around fifteen or sixteen.
What form will your character's NV take?
A slick black smart phone type device, as Vanitas has no use for anything fancy. The side that does not have the screen and keyboard is emblazoned with a red
Unversed symbol Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities:
Darkness
Darkness is Vanitas' main source of strength, being composed entirely of it. Extensive use of it guides the entirety of his power, allowing him to move at inhuman speeds, gives him inhuman strength and allows for a variety of darkness-based attacks. Armed with his Keyblade, Vanitas is capable of casting dark versions of fire and lightning spells. In addition, he can use his darkness to create corridors, which are basically portals from one location to the another.
Unversed
note: If this falls under the summoning restrictions that's quite all right. The Unversed are about as sentient as the Heartless-- meaning their highest level of thought involves simply the desire to attack and obey their master. They're not capable of thinking for themselves. I'm going to go ahead and list them just in case.
The Unversed are monsters spawned directly from Vanitas, and are under his control. They are mostly his fledgling emotions, but Unversed are also the result of powerful negative emotions from others as well. This is why Vanitas is always attempting to draw the negative emotions out of others: by using them, he can create Unversed, which he can then draw back into himself for more power. The more negativity from different sources he can combine, the more powerful Unversed he can create. For example, the Cursed Coach Unversed was created with the jealousy Lady Tremaine, Anastasia and Drizella had for Cinderella's grace and beauty.
Emotions
Vanitas is able to sense some of Ventus' emotions. As the Unversed are often the result of the emotions of others, it stands to reason that Vanitas can also at least detect negative emotions, though he is unable to identify which negative emotion belongs to whom. Through this, however, he is in most cases able to pinpoint the source of the negativity and exacerbate it into something he can use.
Weapons:
Vanitas wields a Keyblade by the name of
Void Gear. It is his main weapon and, as an Apprentice to Master Xehanort, he is quite skilled in wielding it. It is capable of blunt blows as a normal bludgeon, as well as casting magic. Although Terra, Ven and Aqua use their Keyblades as anything from transportation devices to giant cannons, Vanitas has never been seen using his as anything other than a weapon.
Keyblades are also used to unlock a wide variety of locks and to extract hearts from a person's body. Vanitas will happily do either, but will likely be doing more of the former than the latter.
History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History: spoilers!
Approximately four years ago, after seasoned Keyblade Master Xehanort determined that Ventus was not a suitable vessel to transfer his own heart to, he chose to use the apprentice for another purpose: forging the χ-blade. Though pronounced the same as Keyblade, the χ-blade will instantly reconnect the hearts of all beings and separated worlds, invoking a second Keyblade War. According to his research, in order to forge the ultimate blade, a heart of pure light and a heart of pure dark of equal power are required to collide. When Ventus refused to use his own darkness in battle, Master Xehanort used his Keyblade to forcefully remove the darkness from Ventus' heart. This darkness manifested into the being named Vanitas.
Vanitas' appearance at this point remains a mystery. However, Vanitas had simply taken too much from Ventus for himself, resulting in Ventus succumbing to slumber, his light rapidly waning. Master Xehanort, thinking his now fragmented apprentice dying, took him to Destiny Islands to live out his final moments. There, his heart connected with a brand new heart (Sora's) on the islands, replacing the missing pieces Vanitas had stolen away and saving Ventus' life. As a result, Vanitas formed a sort of second-hand connection to the new heart, and ever since, his appearance has mirrored this.
It is unclear what exactly transpired in the four years between Vanitas' creation and his first appearance in the Land of Departure, but as Ventus grew stronger training under Master Eraqus, Vanitas was likely doing the same under Master Xehanort, perfecting his ability to procure and control the Unversed. It was also likely at this time that Vanitas learned of Master Xehanort's intentions for him: to merge with Ventus to forge the χ-blade. Vanitas, wanting little more than instigating a second Keyblade War, accepted this fate readily, developing a powerful, somewhat perverse attachment to his goal.
By then, Master Xehanort had chosen a new vessel for his heart to migrate to: Terra. Though the threat of the Unversed perpetuated Terra and Aqua's leaving the Land of Departure after their Mark of Mastery Exam, Ventus was not allowed to help, and required prompting to leave against Master Eraqus' wishes. Vanitas, able to sense how Ventus loved Terra like a brother, was able to manipulate Ventus into leaving by appearing in his room and telling him that Terra will not be the same person Ventus knows the next time he sees him. With that single encounter, the unraveling began.
Vanitas took little interest in the Keybearer Master Xehanort pursued as his vessel, instead shifting his focus to his other half, Ventus, and the only true Keyblade Master of the three friends: Aqua.
Ventus was his first test. Vanitas lured him to the Badlands by passing by him across the Lanes between worlds, and initiated battle. Ventus, however, proved to be far too weak to forge the χ-blade, so Vanitas did the logical thing to do to those who are such wasted potential: he attempted to eliminate him. Mickey's intervention garnered Ventus both his life and a second chance in Vanitas' eyes-- he left the battered duo behind, and officially put Ventus "on probation."
Though he sensed potential in the other half of his heart, Vanitas needed a backup-- a Plan B, so to speak. Perhaps an actual Keyblade Master would be of better use. When Ven, Terra and Aqua parted ways in Radiant Garden after defeating the Trinity Armor, Vanitas approached Aqua, demanding to know if Ventus had gotten stronger, and also picking a fight. Vanitas lost the battle, but not even a spectacular defeat fazed him-- he simply burst into laughter and congratulated Aqua on the win when she attempted to remove his mask.
Perhaps to Vanitas' delight, Ventus' probation didn't last long, and he quickly grew strong enough to fulfill his intended purpose. Under Master Xehanort's orders, he defeated and kidnapped King Mickey from Neverland in order to lure Ventus back to the Badlands. An admirable success later, Vanitas encountered Aqua a second time. No need for a Plan B anymore. He attempted to eliminate Aqua; however, he found himself once again completely outmatched, and was knocked unconscious. When Aqua collapsed from exhaustion, Vanitas recovered enough to pick himself up and escaped.
Shortly after Ventus returned to the Land of Departure and confronted Master Eraqus, Terra thrust him through a portal to stop their Master from destroying him. The portal led to Destiny Islands-- where Vanitas was waiting. He needed to lure Ventus away from his home and toward his own fate one more time.
Ventus could either fight him and forge the χ-blade, or he could watch Vanitas squeeze the life out of his friends.
The two halves of a whole clashed for the final time in the Keyblade Graveyard. When Ventus defeated Vanitas in a fight after he'd nearly extracted Aqua's heart, Vanitas removed the visor from his helmet, allowing Ventus to see his face. He would be the only one to see his true face, as by the time Aqua awakened from Vanitas attacking her, the two had already merged and forged the χ-blade.
At this point, two battles raged at once. In the Keyblade Graveyard, Aqua battled Vanitas-Ventus. In their now merged heart, Vanitas and Ventus clashed against each other again. In both cases, light triumphed over dark, and Vanitas and the χ-blade were both destroyed.
Point in Canon:
Vanitas will be pulled into Siren's Port after his encounter with Ventus on Destiny Islands. Though Ventus had flopped into the world without knowing the fate of either Terra or Master Eraqus, and then in the next few moments suffering from a brain-splitting headache in remembering how Vanitas was created, he still refused to fight. To fulfill his destiny and forge the χ-blade. Vanitas obviously would have none of this.
The pull catches him right after he steps through the portal to leave Destiny Islands, and right after he threatens to destroy Ventus' friends if he does not fight.
Character Personality:
Vanitas is a being composed entirely of darkness, without even a smidge of light-- as such, the core of his personality reflects his origins. He is somewhat of a rarity in that he quite literally has no redeeming qualities to speak of. He is cold, calculating, clever and manipulative, and shows no sign of remorse for his actions. He will injure or attempt to kill (Mickey and Aqua respectively) without any thought to the morality of what he chooses to do. In most situations, he is calm and collected, and rarely lets anything faze him-- in fact, even if defeated, he's more likely to find it amusing, or even hint at being vaguely impressed.
The main thing that would unravel Vanitas' collected demeanor is his own undoing. When defeated by Ventus within their rejoined heart, the boy who was laughing psychotically earlier dissolved into complete panic as he and both the χ-blade faded away. On that same vein, if he were to lose control of himself or the situation, Vanitas would likely react angrily.
Although he appears to understand feelings such as sentiment and friendship, as he's able to easily manipulate the emotions of Ventus and his friends, he has no personal use or desire for friendship, love, or other similar affections. In fact, he seems to have some disdain for the idea of friendship. Vanitas is able to "sense" Ventus' feelings to an extent (noted in Xehanort's Report), which is probably where his understanding of sentimental feelings arise. It is likely he is not capable of conjuring these emotions for himself.
Speaking with Vanitas is an exercise in patience and deflecting an overwhelming amount of negativity. He is generally uninterested in people who are not Ventus or friends of Ventus; however, he's not above tossing a snarky remark or insult at anyone who gets in his way. At the same time, if someone is displaying an alarming amount of darkness, it's possible to catch Vanitas' interest. After all, it may be something he can exploit.
As a being of negativity from which all Unversed originate, Vanitas basks in the negative feelings of others. Exacerbating these negative emotions can strengthen the power of the Unversed and by proxy himself, so Vanitas will take every opportunity he has to forcefully draw the dark emotions out of others. He will say and do anything to get a rise out of someone-- his favorite targets in particular are Ventus and Ventus' friends, but if anyone else is feeling particularly negative, one can bet that Vanitas will be there to take advantage of it.
Vanitas was created for one sole purpose, and accomplishing it is his main and only priority, regardless of whether Ventus is willing or even strong enough. He has a psychotic attachment to forging the χ-blade and starting another Keyblade War, and seems to be over-confident in his ability to carry out his and Master Xehanort's plans. He will certainly choose his battles, but he is arrogant when he does pick fights, and also tends to underestimate the opponents he chooses (e.g. Aqua, Ventus to an extent, particularly in their first encounter in the Badlands). Not that Vanitas is a sore loser-- he's been known to burst into unrestrained laughter after defeat.
Character Plans:
Vanitas' main goal and the reason for existing is to forge the χ-blade and to initiate a second Keyblade War. Although circumstances are different in Siren's Port, this outcome-- and the χ-blade itself-- are still plausible in his eyes. Tracking down Ventus and testing his strength will be his main priority. He'll decide where to go next from there.
In the meantime, Vanitas will be working on reconnaissance. He will be particularly interested in-- even though he absolutely abhors the feeling-- of the Pull as well as the Darkness. He is by no means a social creature, so he will instead be leering creepily in the shadows, just watching others, fighting if provoked, and harassing if someone catches his interest.

[so here's a sight-- or lack of a sight, as it were. the video feed is mostly obscured by black when it first flicks on, accented by the sounds of the device scuffing against the pavement. briefly, light suddenly peeks through. and then it's gone again. light. dark.]
[after a moment, whoever had been waffling over crushing the NV underneath his boot finally notices the red recording light, and steps away to loom over it. it's a teenage boy in a black, clinging suit and a matching black fishbowl helmet. it looks like an awfully uncomfortable getup. with the visor of his helmet completely obscuring his face, it's impossible to see his expression-- but he is not at all amused by the voices and noises that have been coming from the NV ever since he arrived.]
Surely you people have better things to do than yammer at each other all day.
[does he sound familiar? maybe. depends on who's listening. the feed suddenly lifts, sways, and finally focuses on a building. Vanitas has attached the NV to his belt and is now walking. obnoxious as the thing is, it's probably more useful to him functioning than a scrap of plastic-- he has some use for the chattering twerps after all. the way the building bounces and sways awkwardly on the feed suggests that Vanitas' gait is a little... off. he's still feeling the effects of being pulled here-- not that he would ever admit it.]
Since it seems like such a big screaming deal to you all, tell me something. How important are your friends to you? Would you die for them? Or are you one of those losers moping in the background over not having any friends?

He had heard enough about it stalking around the City and silently listening in on conversations the past few days. A bunch of lying idiots, the lot of them, surely-- but one brisk morning, he slunk out into the shadows to see it-- experience it-- for himself.
With the exception of Master Xehanort's orders, Vanitas was the only one in charge of his own actions. The notion of a "Pull" that drew him back to the city was ludicrous at best, and infuriating at worst-- not an emotion Vanitas was interested in experiencing in that moment. Fury was a source of negativity he would take advantage of for his own purposes, of course, but he preferred inflicting on others-- it was more satisfying to push a person just past his or her threshold of sanity and watch them make idiots of themselves. But for him-- loss of control? Incoherent rage and fighting off of it until he's face down in the dirt? Just not Vanitas' style.
But as his footsteps drew him farther away from the City, leather creased noisily when Vanitas curled his gloved hands into fists. Whether it was the anger seizing his black heart or the inexplicable tugging in his chest that was prompting him to turn on his heels and head back that was more prevalent... Vanitas didn't know, but he hated it. He hated it more than sunlight and that brotherly love he could sense between Ventus and Terra.
He drew in a breath, quelling the urge to call for his Keyblade and destroy whoever he encountered first. No need for reckless violence, as much as he wanted it. Whatever this Pull is was not stopping Vanitas from accomplishing his more important goals; frankly, it was more the principle of the thing. If he could not control his ability to leave, then what else had he lost? Until he could figure out how to defy the Pull, he would just have to assume control of something else.
So fury, huh? He'd give in... for now. Pick a target back in the City-- one of Ventus' friends, perhaps-- and prod at their weak points mercilessly. Initiate some fury. Coupled with his own annoyance, the fledglings he could pull from the ground...
Vanitas turned on his heel and silently began his trek back to where he came.
