We wanted to make sure that you, future Offerers and Bidders, have a wide range of great organizations that are legit and trustable. We want you to feel comfortable when posting your offers, and of course, bids, that the money will go to a charity that stand by their, and our, cause.

NOH8, It Gets Better Project and The Trevor Project are just a few ( Read more... )

I'd like to suggest adding the Georgia Safe Schools Coalition to the approved list. They are specifically for schools in the state of Georgia (US), so I understand if it's too narrow a focus, but they are committed to fighting LGBTQQ bullying in schools. I think they're a wonderful organization.

Another organization that would do well on your list: Lambert House is a small organization in the city of Seattle that provides a safe space, counseling and social events for queer and questioning youth under the age of 22. They do wonderful work and although their focus is narrow they are committed to helping young people in this area, and are staffed with marvelous professionals and friends. As above, I'll understand if the focus is too narrow - Seattle is a very open and accepting city in general, and a little easier on our young people than perhaps other parts of the nation or world. Nevertheless, the work they do is important and does make a difference for young people just beginning to find their own way.

The Albert Kennedy Trust

It's a British charity, mostly in London and Manchester, that is set out to help LGBT youth who are made homeless.

To quote the top of their about page...

AKT’s Mission is:

To ensure that all lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans young people are able to live in accepting, supportive and caring homes, by providing a range of services to meet the individual needs of those who would otherwise be homeless or living in a hostile environment.

ETA: In general Britain is seen as more tolerant of LGBT people than the US and other countries. And I think in many ways, and on average, it is. But there's still far to many kids being thrown onto the streets case because of prejudice by their own family. If you ask me, somebody ought to prosecute parents who do that but... yeah. It happens here too.

They seem like a great organisations, and I agree with what you say - there are many who think that since some European countries (Norway, where I live, also being one of them) seem more tolerant, things like this doesn't happen, but it does, oh, I know.

I'll add them right away!

Question neth_dugan December 5 2010, 18:03:00 UTC
This is a separate thing from the above so it's in a different comment.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to put a brief description of each organisation under the link to them on the main post? Some of them are famous like the Trevor Project but a one sentence summary or something might be an idea.

I am working on it, actually, I've just been busy with advertising and other things. For now we just wanted to create a list with organisations, and see if people had any they thought we should add/remove and that so before bidding starts. But description will be up before bidding starts, that's for sure. Thank you for letting us know though!

Ahhh, wasn't sure. Not surprised you're busy. I submitted a post about it to Queerwatch on Tumblr but it hasn't shown up yet (though their server has been having problems) and when it does hopefully it'll get reblogged over there and raise publicity for this.

Oh, thank you! I posted about it on my personal tumblr last week, but that was before bidding opened. I'll look out for it and reblog it myself!
