He he. Well, my first boyfriend was a homophobic, super conservative, extremely anti-choice, (supposedly) Christian-based, President Bush-adoring kinda guy. And I actually remember telling myself, "I'll give it a shot." Surprisingly, all of these factors didn't really have an effect on the breakup ... though, I'm sure they would have eventually. :-P
My thing is, I don't keep these people as close friends, but I will maintain a connection, depending on the person. It's a lot easier to be close with someone on or near the same wavelength as our own beliefs. But I know I've got connections (and family ties) with people who disagree with almost anything I believe in for civil rights or whatnot. I try my best not to let certain things sway me in whether or not I keep someone around, unless they are just not-go-good people, in general ... I guess.
Not saying it's the way to go. Issues with civil rights run thick in our blood.
I agree with this too. Probably because I have relatives that are anti-gay or racist, and I really can't cut them out of my life. With those people, I feel if I already really care about you, then the more productive thing to do is try and discuss issues with you in hopes of opening up your mind.
